bad source+ incorrect reading of source

ginseng is listed as having the adverse effect of schizophrenia, the citation come from webmd and webmd says that people with schizophrenia shouldnt take ginseng, not that ginseng can cause schizophrenia (a pretty major mistake). plus the citation isnt even a study. somebody should fix that. i guess i will unless anybody has any objections? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.78.252 (talk) 20:20, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Article name

I'm not entirely happy with the name of this article, but I have been unable to think of something that clearly solvent the problems and is NPOV. The title should convey that this is a list of herbs and plants that have been presented as medical or alternative treatments, and have adverse effects which are known or suspected. One simpler possibility could be "List of herbs with adverse effects." Perhaps this would be simpler and more NPOV. Another could be "List of medicinal herbs with known adverse effects". Input from anyone who happens by would be appreciated, but it would be good to let there be some discussion before actually moving to avoid multiple moves, if at all possible. I'm not crazy about "List of herbs with adverse effects", because it implies that unlisted herbs lack adverse effects. In fact, any substance that is rigorously studied will prove to have adverse effects, and a lack of study of a specific herb should not be confused with safety. How about something like "List of adverse effects in medicinal herbs"? Also, it might be worth mentioning some of the relevant facts of life, like the dose makes the poison. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:18, 4 December 2000

Well I think it's as great idea for a Wikipedia page (he said, sarcastically). Maybe someone ought to do a similar list of Proprietary Drugs With Known Adverse Effects. I mean, it's not in the least bit unreasonably casting a sciento-fascistic eye upon the 8000 year old practice of herbal medicine, perfected over many generations in various traditional societies (which, strangely enough seem to have been sustainable for rather a long time). Valerian error in scientific name

Herbs with adverse drug interactions

Shouldn't "addictive effects" actually be "additive effects"? I've never heard of two medicines having an addictive effect when taken together, but additive effects are quite common. Captain Packrat (talk) 00:37, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Tobacco? Mint?

I doubt the validity of a list like this, no matter what is included and what not. For one thing, what is a "herb"? I am surprised not to find "tobacco" on the list, but arguably, it is not a herb. For another, nearly everything can have adverse effects; e.g., mint can be allergenic. And if you eat extreme amounts of anything, perhaps to the exclusion of other food stuffs, that will usually also be harmful.

Perhaps a rename would make this less problematic - such as, "List of known adverse effests of various herbs"? Or, if the focus is on herbs that are promoted as herbal medicine, perhaps the title should mention "medicine". Neither of these suggestions remove all problems, though.
