Merger_proposal

As Spain has been both a Kingdom and a Republic, I suggested to merge the article List of Spanish monarchs into this one. I believe that having two articles is probably not redundant, but unnecessary. I believe that the best option is in the Spanish wikipedia, the List of heads of state of Spain is divided between the List of Spanish monarchs and the List of heads of state of Spain who were not monarchs. This way, the heads of state of Spain would became a disambiguation page. Trasamundo (talk) 22:10, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

What Is This Supposed to Be?

I can't see how this fits on the chronology: In the late 1800's/early 1900's Napoleon migrated to abruzzo, italy and was known as king Napoleon(e) of catalunya, spain. Also, why not use capital letters where they should be? Straydog-1st (talk) 01:01, 27 December 2010 (GMT)

Carlist nonsense

"Carlos organized and led the Third Carlist War. Between 1872 and 1876 he effectively ruled much of peninsular Spain, having as much legitimacy as the Presidents of the First Republic.[5]"

This is plain bullshit. This is not "effective rule over much of peninsular Spain". He did not have "as much legitimacy as the Presidents of the First Spanish Republic", given that he was not recognized by the Spanish Cortes. In fact, he refused to be adknowledged by them. He wasn't recognized by any foreign govenrment either. He wasn't even the monarch under Spanish succession law, who during his "reign" was Isabella II and after her "abdication", Alfonso XII. We aren't counting them as competing "claimants" during the I Republic aren't we? Just like an article titled List of heads of state of Irak wouldn't include Al-Bagdadi. Or how the article doesn't include Carlos "VI" as "competing head of state" during the early reign of Isabella II, even though he controlled more territory of peninsular Spain than his grandson ever did. Comments and inconsistencies

1. I don't see a reason for having two columns for the reign. They can be conveniently combined.

2. Charles I is listed with the title of king of Spain, the first to appear with such title. Then, logically, nobody should be listed before him. Likewise, Scotland and England did not become United Kingdom until 1707 with Anne. I see the same situation and no king/queen can be labeled British before 1707. From what I understand Castilla and Aragón existed as separate entities and did not fuse into Spain until the time of either Charles I or Philip II.

3. Joanna died in 1516 and the article says "Upon her death, he [Charles I] became sole King of Castile and Aragon, and the thrones were left permanently united to Philip II of Spain and successors". That sounds like Philip II was the actual first king of Spain. Something is not adding up.
