Source for list?

What is the source for this List? Does the list have to be updated manually or is it an automated process -- say from articles which are Catagorized such as Weapons, etc.?--TGC55 18:59, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

  • It is manually updated. --D.E. Watters 03:07, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Added AK-101/2/3/4/5/7 manufacturer name

I just replaced the AK-10x assault rifles' names to include the manufacturer IZHMASH. If you need reference, this linky leads you to the IZHMASH weapons list, which includes those rifles. 200.95.115.212 22:44, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Rocket and grenade launchers

Is it a good idea to include in this section grenade launchers and rocket launchers?

Reordering of List

I think the list should be reorder by weapon type. Such as all pistols grouped together, all rifles, etc. Alexander 04:44, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree that the list is way too long, it needs some kind of organization, but I haven't yet figured out what will work best. Arthurrh 03:38, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

General categories of weapons should, possibly with subsections, such as Rifles-Assault Riles-sniper/hunting rifles/etc.Alexander 07:10, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

That works best as when i was making the list of 20th century weapons i orgionaly did it like how the artical is now(not i didnt save it) and i looked over and decide that was confusing as HELL so i put it up like a did how its now. also u should help me get that list bigger(ForeverDEAD 15:32, 31 August 2007 (UTC))
Is there anyway to replace the unruly thing with something automatically created using the categories? Arthurrh 04:15, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
If thats not possible(which i dought) wouldnt it just be eaisyer to just blank the artical and start from scratch?(ForeverDEAD 01:59, 15 September 2007 (UTC))
Some Guns appear more than one like "Colt M16" in "C" and "M16" in "M" i think it'll help to reduce the list...217.132.21.96 11:57, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
When its re organized it should state that all weapons are lissted with thier common names in the english languge. That way we dont get Colt M16 and normal M16. The manufacturer listing should stop as it causes confusion and disnt helping anyway ForeverDEAD 12:09, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Get rid of all guns that aren't that well known. And only include those that are most common. 200.88.222.60 (talk) 01:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Include all variations?

Should we include all models of every weapon produced here? For instance, should we list the M16A1 and the M16A2? Wouldn't it be simpler to just list the general classifying model rather than the specific variation? Is the list intended to provide a reference for every possible designation (M1, M1C, M1D, etc...) or to just list every model of weapon?

It seems that people put up every single variation known to man. If we continue with this policy, I advocate having variants redirected to the model page to prevent an over-proliferation of useless pages. For example: the M16A1 and the M16A2 should both link to the M16 page. I have already done this with the variations of the M1 Garand (M1C & M1D Sniper versions). Maclyn611 05:13, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

It just on a case by case basis so far, and problay nothing wrong with continuing this. I mean some variants are have there own links while the more trivial ones can just be grouped. The page itself serves a source for info, so variants probably shouldn't be culled unless there on a sub-page as you did. Greyengine5 05:25, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Maybe releated types could be grouped across the page like this?:
Somerifle - SomerifleA1 - Somerifle A2- SomerifleB - SomerifleB Sniper
Good idea Greyengine5, I like it. That way, the reader can see all available options but still recognize that they fall under one central heading. Even if there isn't a page on the variation they want, they can still find out general information on the model. One suggestion though: How about something more in line with the list? Purely for aesthetic purposes really. It just needs to show that they are derivatives of the weapon. For example:
  • M1 Garand
    • M1C
    • M1D
  • M16
    • M16A1
    • M16A2
  • M2
  • M240
    • M240B
    • M240D
    • M240G
  • M249
  • M252

Maclyn611 17:43, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Yea good idea- uses wiki-code, plus easier to multiple nestings. Ill try and update some to this. Here's Wikipedia:WikiProject_Weaponry- hasn't really gone anywhere though. Greyengine5 22:14, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I went ahead and changed the M1, M14, and M240 articles to reflect this. There is one caveat to this plan though. Variants should only be nested when they are from the same country of origin as the model. For instance, the MAG 58 (NATO) is the same weapon as the M240. To put it under the M240 listing though would make it difficult for non-Americans to find. I propose we keep it as a seperate listing. That way, if you're American, you can visit the M240 page and see that it is also known as the MAG 58, but if you're European, you can look up the MAG 58 and be redirected over to the M240 page.Maclyn611 23:57, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I see what you mean concerning the listing of VERY similar models of firearms. I will see if I can pear down the companion model of the Beretta 92G-SD pistol (which is the 96G-SD) to only the differences between the model

versions. I have tried to only list the characteristics of the 92G-SD as it varies from the 92FS, but I feel that the description of the 92FS is lacking quite a bit of information. wterrell 12:27, 30 Dec, 2004 (MT-USA)

I just made a few minor revisions, but this wikipedia list_of_firearms page ought to be removed. A page listing gun manufacturers would be much more productive. For instance, take a look at the Glock page, which lists all of Glock's firearms better than this page does. Why are we re-listing them here? This effort is a recipe for inaccuracy and lack of maintainability. Thorne 12:23, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Disagree -- this page is useful, especially with this parenthetical information that is slowly but surely being added to it. It's helpful for those of us looking to make smaller lists of guns as well - such as assault rifles or submachine guns (just grep for the parenthetical stuff). It serves a purpose. Surgo 23:33, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)
I agree that this page is totally out of control. After trying to organize the list of Beretta pistols, we must come to the conclusion that the listing of every minor change of these pistols should not have a Wikipedia entry/page but should share informational entries with similar variations. As an example: the whole 96 model series is only different from the 92 model series by what caliber in which the pistol is offered. Many models differ only in the finish in which the pistol is offered.
They shouldn't have their own page, but there's nothing wrong with them having their own entry here, IMO. Surgo 23:33, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)
Add me to the positive voices for this page. It might not be as useful for the general public, but it's pretty useful for people creating smaller lists, especially with this parenthetical information that is currently being added. When the parenthetical information is finished (and maybe with a bit of reorganization), this "out-of-control" list will be excellent.

I think that the Lee Enfield .303 is a sutible firearm to include in the article. It was the standard issue for Troops fighting for Brittan, in world wars one and two and served for years after. Many are still in use by hinters today —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gordino0 (talkcontribs) 00:17, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey you wikigunguys

Check this out! What's up with that? You dudesez needs to write mee uh artakul on the 9_mm_Winchester_Magnum duh, wikipedia is teh suxor

If no one can/will write the "artakul", do it yourself, and saying "wikipedia is teh suxor" is a less then creative way of telling us your thoughts. Don't forget to sign your comments. 4nthr4x (talk) 03:45, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Need a whole new set of categories: firearms by ammunition-type

A giant article like this one needs some sub-sort categories and you can think of many that have already been tried: sorting by type (sidearm, rifle, etc), calibre (a start at this has been made), and finally by cartridge (ammunition type), which isn't (of course) the same as calibre. A lot of the last type of information keeps getting added to the cartridge articles, then deleted again. But it really should be tagged as stand-alone lists and re-inserted in each cartridge article, as an embedded list which serves as a main direct, as per WP:SS. For example: the article on .45 ACP once contained a pretty good list of weapons that fired this cartridge. That got shorter and shorter and finally deleted entirely. But it was good information, and many of the weapons already had their own articles. What is needed here is a stand-alone List of firearms manufactured in .45 ACP, and then that referred to, as a main list, within the .45 ACP article. I may try putting it back as a very short section, and see if everybody freaks. But it's a major type of weapons sorting that isn't getting done. SBHarris 01:33, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Red Link "List of firearms" --> "Requested articles/Applied arts and sciences/Weaponry

How are the red link listed weapons from this list ported to the following page? Manually or is there a bot which does the job? How often is it done?

Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Applied_arts_and_sciences#Weaponry

This list is really cumbersome to work with, or even look through. It needs some categories, but that's been said before.--TGC55 (talk) 05:32, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not aware of any bot moving red-links from here to Requested Articles. Re organization, either take a crack at it or recommend something here. It's definitely needed. AliveFreeHappy (talk) 17:43, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
