Talk:List of films in the public domain in the United States/2020

Stage Door Canteen (1943)

According to Wikipedia (and also various other sources), the movie Stage Door Canteen (1943) is in the public domain in the US due to non-renewal.

Canada

Since these films are public domain in America, they're likely public domain here in Canada, too.Glammazon (talk) 05:16, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Most of these films are very old, so there's definitely overlap. However, the countries' copyright systems have always differed, and the renewal requirement that puts most of the post-1924 films on this list was abolished by Canada in (coincidentally) 1924. I don't think Canada should have any bearing on this article. lethargilistic (talk) 18:29, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Errors being introduced

An IP editor continually introduces a mixture of errors and unsourced changes (likely also errors). Assuming this is not intentional vandalism, I think they are assuming that the only reason these films go PD is lack of renewal 28 years after release. But that's just clearly erroneous in many cases, and guesswork in others.

For example, sometimes the cause of being placed in the public domain was a missing or defective notice, so the film was PD from the start (like these edits for Charade, The Brain That Would't Die; and Carnival of Souls). These edits are simply wrong, and are clearly introducing factual errors. There's no question about it: these edits are replacing correct information with false information into the article.

In other cases, the source does not indicate why a film is in the public domain, and the IP editor seems to be making a guess that it's due to lack of renewal (based on the dates they enter); for example, The Jackie Robinson Story. But that's just guesswork. It may be that it went PD for lack or renewal in the year they add; but without having a source that either indicates the year, or the reason it went PD (so we could determine the year), again, the IP editor is just guessing.

Please assist in reverting these erroneous and unsubstantiated changes. TJRC (talk) 21:30, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

I agree with the reverts. -- GreenC 02:30, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

I will add my support here. The article is on my watchlist and I would revert the edits too if they hadn't already been taken care of. I don't know if it is intentional vandalism but the edits are harming the integrity of the information. Betty Logan (talk) 21:35, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
