New Zealand's dual-code internationals

edit

The article is now confusing. It starts with "New Zealand had 18 dual-code rugby internationals before World War one.[6]" but then the list includes players from after WW1. It needs to be cleaned up and clarified.

RichardLowther (talk) 20:11, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I had an attempt at revising the statement. I think most of the confusion is because the list is incomplete and we don't have all 18 names. Mattlore (talk) 23:50, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

A while back I had a note on this talk page to assist the completionists (including self). It said The Sydney Morning Herald 17/10/06 quotes ARL statistician David Middleton "in 100 years of Rugby League there have been 37 NZ and 43 Australian dual internationals". So now we also know that 18 of them represented before the War. Just shows that we've got a way to go.-Sticks66 12:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Karl Ifwerson

edit

According to Tony Collins book "A social history of Rugby Union" page 171, New Zealander Ifwerson played league for NZ against the British tourists in 1914, captained the Kiwis in all four tests against the Kangaroo tourists in 1919 and the 1920 British tourists before switching to Union in 1921 and played for the All Blacks against South Africa.

RichardLowther (talk) 18:53, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, he is one of the few who went League->Union in the early days. Deserves an article IMO. Btw I believe the correct spelling is Karl Ifwersen but as with many early players there are probably several sources that all list it differently. Mattlore (talk) 23:53, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Complete lists?

edit

Are these completed lists of all the players that are DCI's or part lists? I think it should be clear in the article which they are.

Country classifications

edit

Players are classified by the countries for whom they represented. Thus Lote Tuqiri is one of "Australia's " DCIs since that's who he dually represented notwithstanding he's Fijian. Similarly Bill Hardcastle although he's a Kiwi. The Dual country section deals with those who represented different countries in the different codes. But for Trevor Allan I have included him in the Australian list notwithstanding his RL debut was made for Other Nationalities. This is because unlike Henry Paul and Lesley Vainikolo who became eligible to represent England, Tubby Allan was not eligible, hence he played for Other Nats . It was that he was Australian that enabled him to be an Other Nat. Any views/comments appreciated -Sticks66 11:56, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

No worries. I don't see any other possible way to do it. Starting a new category for Other Nationalities? I don't think so.--Jeff79 (talk) 13:38, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

More players

edit

If you suspect a player is a DCI (and I think we've got at least 25 more Kiwis to add) just add his name here and I'll check it out. Alternatively there's a section on my talk page -Sticks66 14:28, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

DCIs to be added

edit

Tom van Vollenhoven.--Jeff79 (talk) 14:31, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's also entirely possible that Charlie Seeling played in some of those early Other Nationalities teams, but I don't have the info to verify that.--Jeff79 (talk) 08:09, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Check out Mike Coulman (and info at Salford_City_Reds#Players_Earning_International_Caps_Whilst_At_Salford which I think came from here.)--Jeff79 (talk) 16:45, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Jim Brough & George A. Gillett.--Jeff79 (talk) 13:31, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Rugby League Journal Autumn 2010 issue shows that Toni Danieli played Rugby Union for Italy http://www.espnscrum.com/statsguru/rugby/player/5912.html before crossing to League to play for Wigan - under the 'stage name' of Tony Rossi and the Italian RL side against the touring Australians at the end of the 1959/60 Kangaroo tour.

RichardLowther (talk) 18:48, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

The order is the chronological order of the cross-code debut (for it's at that point they they each became a DCI).-Sticks66 13:17, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The females

edit

With respect, what the article says at 1 Aug 2011 is -

Female dual-code rugby internationals
Kristy Giteau Australian rugby union player Kristy Giteau (the older sister of Matt Giteau) is a dual-code international She made her union Test debut for the Wallaroos on 8 August 2009 in a 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup qualifier against Samoa, scoring a try in a 67–0 Australia win.[1]
Trish Hina (who has already represented New Zealand in rugby league) made her debut in union during the 2010 World Cup.
Joanne Watmore has represented England at both rugby union and rugby league. She began playing for girls rugby union team at nine years old. Watmore was a pupil at Wade Deacon High School. She became a dual international on 13 July 2008 when playing rugby league for England against France. Joanne then went on to represent England in the 2008 Women's Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

What we need for these players to go back in the article is details of Giteau's & Hina's Int'l RL match and preferably a citation. And details of Watmore's senior RU Rep appearance. Is the suggestion that she was a junior England RU rep ? A junior RU rep appearance won't get her into this article, I'm afraid. -Sticks66 08:50, 6 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Henry Fa'afili

edit

Can someone add Henry Fa'afili to the list of players who played two codes for two different countries. He played League for Samoa and NZ then changed codes and made his Rugby Union debut in 2006 against Fiji in the 2007 Pacific Nations Cup. Siwhat (talk) 06:50, 27 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Restructuring table headings

edit

I propose that the tables are restructured in a similar way to this example for Maltese dual-code internationals:

No. Player International debut Cross-code debut
Match Date Position Match Date Position
1. Jarrod Sammut RL vs   Lebanon 8 Oct 2006 Halfback RU vs   Croatia 8 Oct 2008
2. Matt Jarrett RU ≤2009[1] RL vs   Lebanon[2] 6 May 2017 Interchange
