Talk:List of downloadable songs for the Rock Band series/Archive 3

Recent edits

I just noticed this edit, and similar edits to the other pages. In addition to introducing some syntax errors (removing a "{" from a template transclusion, etc.), they removed sorting parameters, with no edit summary to explain why. In-game and in most lists, "The Killers", for example, are listed as "The Killers" but sorted as "Killers", which is what the sort template was there for. If there's a good reason for the edits, that's fine by me, but such a substantial change really does need an edit summary and explanation, so I've reverted the edits. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 18:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Some proposed changes

I have some proposed changes, mostly to simplify the table and footnotes. I'd be willing to make some or all of these changes if there is consensus (or just no objection in some reasonable amount of time).

  1. Remove the bold text of masters and instead mark covers with a footnote. At this point, most songs are in bold which increases page size (and, therefore, download/rendering time).   Done
  2. Do we really need the "Family Friendly" column? At this point, it doesn't even indicate LEGO: Rock Band compatibility, because RB3 DLC doesn't work in LEGO. Plus, the column greatly increases the size of the page. Any objections to removing it at some point?

Yes, I object to the family friendly section being removed. Can someone please put the "Family Friendly" section back? It was rather important to me and I'm rather upset that it's missing now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.27.110.135 (talk) 10:15, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

  1. Remove footnote "c", because plenty of songs don't have keyboard parts and it is as valid an instrument as the others, so it doesn't seem right to have c mean "Missing guitar, bass, drums, or vocals, but missing keys doesn't matter". People interested in this can look it up easily on rockband.com.   Done
  2. Footnote "i" seems extraneous; I think it is implied by the pro guitar/bass upgrade availability being in the same row as the tracks.   Done
  3. Footnotes "g" and "h" seems to me like unimportant trivia.   Done
  4. I'm pretty sure that "Burning Down the House", "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Blue Monday" are available as singles, so they don't need footnote "j" (does that remove all instances of the footnote's use?), although "d" may be appropriate.   Done
  5. To simplify code and maintenance, maybe we could use {{dts}} for dates?   Done, using {{dtsa}}

Also, a question: Right now, songs in the "Funk" genre are listed with that genre, as they were in-game when they were originally released. In RB3 and on the current version of the official website, they are instead in the "R&B/Soul/Funk" genre. Should we use the new one for consistency?   Done

Let me know what you think! –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 19:14, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm now working on implementing most of these in my userspace. Once they're ready, I'll update the articles themselves. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 23:35, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Implementing first wave of changes to cleanup footnotes and table apperance (that is to say, bold text). –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 12:56, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Changed my mind about that family friendly column, but I've finished everything else on this list. There are some more minor tweaks I'm going to make over the next few days, but nothing as drastic as all of that redesign. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 21:34, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
I just tweaked {{dtsa}} so that the dates will not break across lines (saving a lot of visual space for users of some monitors). –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 14:45, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm also thinking about replacing "Decade" with "Year", so that it is more specific and to make the column take up less space. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 14:51, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

PSN outage

Now that the PSN is back, we should soon be finding out when the DLC that should have come out for PS3 over the last three weeks will be uploaded and available for purchase. It definitely bears mentioning that three weeks worth of songs weren't available for PS3 when they should have been, particularly since we have PlayStation Network outage as a handy link for the situation. Green-eyed girl (Talk · Contribs) 08:07, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't know... I really feel like having all these footnotes for release date changes is kind of excessive. Maybe using the column as "First release date regardless of console", rather than "Release date for each console, if they are different from one another" would make more sense? After all, consoles release new DLC on different dates from each other anyway (or at least they used to). –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 15:07, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Next Country Track Pack

Does anyone know about the next country track pack, when will it be released, if at all? I keep seeing the list that says "To Be Determined". Mattseay3000 (talk)

Basically, Harmonix announced (back when the track pack was released) that the songs would be available as DLC at some point in the future. They've followed through with that promise for previous track packs, but have yet to announce specifics for this release. I have no reason to doubt that they will, it is just a question of when. IIRC, the songs were exclusive for at least three months; at this point, we could get them any week. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 19:43, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

KISS, WAR, etc.

I've started a discussion about using "KISS" instead of "Kiss", along with other similar situations, at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (trademarks)#Capitalization in lists. All input would be appreciated. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 13:01, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Proposal: Reorganize to be by-game rather than by-year

Just what the title says. Basically, use List of downloadable songs for Rock Band, List of downloadable songs for Rock Band 2 (being songs released between 2 and 3, even though they're categorized as RB1 DLC at least in the PSN store), and List of downloadable songs for Rock Band 3, with this page compiling them the same way that it does now. It seems to me like a more logical organization. –Drilnoth (T/C) 22:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

No, that gets too confusing too fast, and that's not even something HMX does on the main music page. For example, RB2 would still need multiple lists as well as RB3 for as many songs as they have. And that belies how, for example, Lego RB can use RB1/RB2 DLC. Year is the simplest. --MASEM (t) 22:28, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Okay, fair enough. Also, what do you think of removing the "Family friendly" column? Is it still needed, since now it doesn't even indicate LRB compatibility since RB3 songs don't work in it. It seems much more trivial than the other columns which describe the song (title, artist, decade, genre) or gameplay (pack/single, additional RB3 features, release date). –Drilnoth (T/C) 22:32, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Remove Hendrix from upcoming songs?

This is what the Rolling Stones article said about Jimi Hendrix's songs coming to Rock Band:

Rock Band will dole out Hendrix's music in connection with Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings' own CD/DVD remasters of Hendrix's three studio album and the posthumous release First Rays of the Rising Sun.

Note that it does not specifically say that Rock Band will end up having all four of those albums, just that some of Hendrix's music will be released for the game in connection with the remasters release. This is the only source for saying that Electric Ladyland and First Rays of the Rising Sun are coming to Rock Band, and it seems easily misinterpreted.

Additionally, take a look at this thread over on the official Rock Band forums. HMXhenry sent out a tweet saying "FWIW, [Electric Ladyland] was never on the schedule. Lots of misinformation. We'd obviously love more Hendrix! Watch for official HMX news."

Based on how the original source can be interpreted in multiple ways and the tweet, I'd be inclined to remove Hendrix from "Upcoming artists", because the release of the albums has not been confirmed by Harmonix. I will remove them in a few days if there aren't any objections. –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:21, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

I agree with this assessment. --MASEM (t) 13:58, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Section for albums

Should we make a section of all the albums that are available? I think that would be helpful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.56.44.112 (talk) 05:36, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

They're obvious when sorted by pack title - though I wouldn't be opposed to adding an hiddin sort to prioritize albums over packs over singles. --MASEM (t) 06:41, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Sex and Candy

Last week it said this song would be coming to rock band on tuesday the 27th. It did so why isn't it on the page at all? --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 03:02, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

It got lost somehow in moving "upcoming" to "present". Should be fixed. --MASEM (t) 03:28, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Pumped Up Kicks

also becomes a 3-pack with the 2 previous Foster the People songs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.160.130.14 (talk) 03:36, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Why is These Days by Foo Fighters on the list twice?

Tons of songs have had different release dates for different consoles, but that's the only one that's on the list twice. Why is it special? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.160.130.14 (talk) 16:35, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't think those little footnotes should be there either (and there are lots of things wrong with the footnotes anyway). Lots and lots and lots and lots of songs had different release dates for different consoles. Not just those 3. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.160.130.14 (talk) 05:26, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

We should wait for Thursday to see what happens on the PS Store but based on the Xbox one, yes, all the pre-order tracks are simply just free for pre-order, otherwise available DLC for either platform , and thus should be listed here. --MASEM (t) 18:10, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
All of them are available as DLC on PS4. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/10/06/playstation-store-update-412/

Looking towards RB4 song updates

Given that not all songs are going forward, some getting updated features, and the like, I believe that we should include a new column to include RB4 support, with only three values, "no" (not available for RB4), "partial" (meaning it is supported but doesn't include new RB4 features like freestyle guitar/vocals), and "yes" (meaning they have included updated features, which can be IDed browsing the store). From 2016 onward tables, we'd drop the RB3 column (if that's easy to do, otherwise just keep it and say "no" to all)

However, before we add this, lets give HMX the time they need to get all the launch issues sorted out and update the pack availability which is presently limiting some songs. --MASEM (t) 18:29, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Upcoming Songs

Why include this section? Just include the songs with full information as soon as they have been released. Since the period between announcement and release is so short (1-2 days) it doesn't make a huge difference if you wait to add the songs to the main list. 2607:EA00:105:1C04:38CE:E714:CB01:8411 (talk) 04:54, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Cleanup: Proposal to split up "Rock Band 3 features," NOT remove it

I believe it to be in everyone's best interest to not remove the Rock Band 3 features column, but further break that down and clarify what is compatible with Rock Band 3 and Rock Band 4. For example, instead of saying that a song has "Core" Rock Band 3 features, would it be easier to read if we specify "Keys, Pro Guitar\Bass?"

I propose we spin off that column into a few new ones to futureproof. One possibility is something like this sample table:

Song title Artist Year Genre Single / Pack name Release date Family Friendly Vocal harmony support Available vocal parts Rock Band 3 Pro Mode support Rock Band 4 Freestyle support
Fortunate Son Creedence Clearwater Revival 1969 Southern Rock Single 11/20/2007 Yes No 1 Pro Drums only No
Juke Box Hero Foreigner 1981 Classic Rock Single 11/20/2007 Yes Rock Band 4 only 3 Pro Drums only Vocals, solos
Even Flow Pearl Jam 1991 Grunge Ten (album) 3/24/2009 Yes Yes 2 Pro Guitar/Bass Vocals, solos
Give It Away Red Hot Chili Peppers 1991 Grunge Single 3/5/2013 No No 1 Pro Keys, Pro Guitar/Bass Vocals, solos
Love in an Elevator Aerosmith 1989 Rock Aerosmith Hits Pack 02 10/19/2015 N/A Yes 3 N/A Vocals, solos

Since there is no official Rock Band chart, I've been gathering the necessary data for my own personal use directly from the in-game stores and DLCQuickplay[1] (which I would need help citing) and putting it in a table here: http://1drv.ms/1ZdbKgf

Is this something that would be worth pursuing, fellow Wikipedians? I know this table is extremely important as a reliable source of information away from the game, and this would be a large undertaking on all of us.

Even if we do not clean up with this method, two additional suggestions are to denote (by bolding or italicizing) pulled\unavailable content at a glance instead of a footnote, and to stop guessing the Family Friendly ratings in RB4 content.

Thanks guys. Let me know what you think!

Dillonuw (talk) 03:19, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

@Percivl: and I were talking about this on my talk page recently. My suggestions:
  • "Family Friendly" is really unnecessary here. We don't track ratings of games, we probably shouldn't do it here
  • One column should be used to showcase the options available based on RB3 and RB4 features (which I think total include: Pro Guitar/bass support, Keyboard Support, Vocal Harmonies, Freestyle Guitar, and Freestyle Vocals.) I would not worry too much about this column being sortable.
  • I would then also add a last column as "notes" to indicate things like existing DLC that has yet to come to RB4 and/or has expired rights (though may come to RB4 for previous owners). --MASEM (t) 15:54, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

I was just about to make a post saying the exact same thing. AddingInstruments (talk) 04:46, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
