Merge with History of Organizational Changes?

I think this page would serve better as a repository for keeping track of _all_ organizational changes in the NHL.

They key expansion I have in mind is to incorporate team name changes more explicitly as entries here.

In fact there's already almost complete overlap with this page: [1]

(the key difference being one's in expository format, this one is in table format).

I don't see the point of keeping the information stored separately, given the extensive overlap.

relocation and a name change doesn't equal defunct

no, defunct is when a team no longer operates at all anywhere, after a relocation and name change team history and records remain the same. For example, if a team ceases operations because of financial difficulty that would be considered defunct, but if moved it still exists just with different city and/or name

Changes to Map

It looks like all of the teams that have moved or folded are included on the map on the bottom of the page...except for the Minnesota North Stars. Is there a reason for this, or was it just an oversight? Etphonehome (talk) 08:20, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Winnipeg Jets

Perhaps the Winnipeg Jets label on the map can now be changed to Winnipeg Jets (original), to match how Ottawa is labelled. rkehler3 (talk) 17:03, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Atlanta Thrashers

The Thrashers haven't been moved to Winnipeg & won't be, until a 2/3 majority vote in that favour, by the NHL Board of Governors. GoodDay (talk) 20:52, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Also, I believe that True North, the group attempting to buy the Thrashers, has a condition that a certain number of season tickets have to be purchased by Winnipeg residents before the sale closes. OrangeMarlin ^{Talk• Contributions} 05:34, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Let's remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and it is not a crystal ball. Yes, it's probable that the NHL will approve the move. But, as with most purchase agreements, there are contingencies, some of which may fail to occur, killing the deal. Or the NHL, after investigating the True North management group, find out that they're funded by aliens from Alpha Centauri. That would be cool, but probably would kill the deal. Oh, hey, I agree with you about WP:CRYSTAL. It's not really much different from what we do with respect to TV shows and the number of episodes aired. That's why I think the current language - which outlines it as pending - is appropriate. It definitely shouldn't be written as a done deal, but similarly it should be acknowledged here as it is a reality (as opposed to the conjecture from even a few days ago). --Ckatz^chat_spy 01:37, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

I know it's a little after the fact, but for those who aren't current on the subject, the purchase-relocation of the Thashers was approved by the league and the relocation has taken place. So as far as that is concerned, this section is no longer revelant. But I think it would be good for editors to read over this section so they are aware for the next NHL relocation. lockout gap and Ducks timeline

Any thoughts on the utility of the timeline graph (List of defunct and relocated National Hockey League teams#Timeline) using a white gap to denote the 2004-05 lockout/cancellation? The individual franchise office locations, non-playing staff, merchandising, and such continued throughout. So the franchise existed in those markets during the gap. The current treament opens a (tiny) unanswered question for the casual viewer if any teams relocated prior to the unplayed 2004-05 season and had to wait a year to play any games.

Also, the graph currently has "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" ending in 2003-2004 (before the lockout white gap) and "Anaheim Ducks" beginning in 2005-06 (just after the gap). The Ducks rebranding was done prior to the 2006–07 season, so the visualization appears to be off by a year. I defer to actual subject matter experts to verify and determine if there are similar issues for other teams. UW Dawgs (talk) 02:31, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Detroit RedWings

Relocated Franchise History

The comment that only two teams have retained the nickname and history of the original franchise is incorrect. Calgary retained the name "Flames" from the Atlanta franchise, obviously since "Flames" makes no sense as related to Calgary, but does for Atlanta. 2403:4800:9428:1101:D948:8EBC:2226:32F4 (talk) 07:25, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

I think they have a place on this list. While the franchise itself is neither defunct (yet) nor has it been relocated for functional purposes the TEAM has been relocated. As long as this page clarifies that it is only the hockey assets that have moved I think it's a fair inclusion. I'm a firm believer that the point here is to follow the spirit not the letter.
