The county town of Roxburghshire has always been Hawick, not Jedburgh. Note 16 is a nonsense. The council offices were deliberately placed in Newtown St Boswells (an insignificant village) because it is the geographical centre of the Borders, and in order to avoid favouring one of the major towns over the rest. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.215.243.74 (talk • contribs)

As the author of the maligned Note 16, I would point out that it was based on quite a bit of research. Jedburgh was the county town in 1846 [1]. According to this 1907 encyclopedia: "Hawick is the largest town, and Jedburgh the county town". The 1911 Britannica also states that Jedburgh was the county town. I have not seen anything that says Hawick ever was. Newtown St Boswells as an administrative centre for roxburghshire predates the Borders Region/ Scottish Borders Area by decades, for instance in this notice in 1910. I just found this source that claims Newtown St Boswells replaced Jedburgh as the county town in 1899, which was earlier than I was aware of. This suggests that there was a large expansion of offices after the 1975 reorganisation and creation of the Borders, and it probably was chosen over the other former county towns for its location, so there is some truth in the anon IP's assertion. Sorry to have caused confusion. I have just looked up the Borders volume in The Buildings of Scotland series (Yale, 2006) -- which is authoritative -- and on p.403 it states that Jedburgh is "the former county town of Roxburghshire". I take it that means the county town in the period when Roxburghshire still existed as an administrative unit. The entry for Newtown St Boswells says nothing about its having succeeded Jedburgh as the county town, merely that the Scottish Borders Council has its headquarters there, and that they were built in 1961 (completed 1968) as Roxburgh County Offices. I suggest that the article simply give Jedburgh as the county town, and make no mention of Newtown St Boswells. (The reason I thought Hawick was the county town is simply that I was born there and have believed it to be the county town all my life. I suspect there are quite a few other Teries (citizens of Hawick) who are under the same misapprehension!)
