Cite 'em or lose 'em edit

Well, there were/are clearly a bunch of fake entries in this list. Here's the simple solution: 1) I am asking for cites for all of the ones I am unfamiliar with. 2) The ones I have heard of, I am not asking for cites for. 3) If you haven't heard of one that I'm not asking for a cite for, ask for it yourself. 4) Any that are uncited and I haven't heard of, I'll remove at some point. As of today, I'm through the Cs asking for cites. ANY uncited additions after today will be removed.

So what belongs here? Clearly, I'm not leaving obvious jokes up: wunch of bankers was clearly added by a wanker and whoever added foo of bars was clearly fubar. I've also removed some that are not simply collective. Take one athelete from each of eight different sports and put them together: they are not a "team" of atheletes". A group of crows, though, is a "murder of crows" in any case.

From here on out, if I remove one that you trust, assume I'm doubting it and requesting a cite. I'm starting with [[[edit]List of collective nouns by subject A-H|A-H]], so it might take a bit before I get to this one. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 16:58, 26 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • AMEN TO THAT
This page is becoming a giant embarrassment to the Wikipedia effort. Let's take out everything that isn't solid-gold-plated true and citeable. Thanks Raymondwinn (talk) 11:46, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to join the work underway at List of collective nouns by subject A-H. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 11:55, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Minyan edit

As it says on the Wikipedia article for minyan, it is not a general term for a group of Jews, in the same way that a flock describes a group of birds in a very general way. Rather, it refers to the necessary quorum for certain ritual activities. It is still a collective noun, and it does count Jews, but not in a general term sort of way. Vampires edit

Kiss of vampires? Is this true? Or is this taken from the Anita Blake series? Surely the more common form is coven of vampies? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.33.68.164 (talk) 16:47, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

This article is lacking in sources. If you dispute any of the ones included, simply remove them. Anyone wishing to restore them must provide a reliable source. I'm yanking Kiss of vampires based on the above. - SummerPhD (talk) 17:29, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Continuing clean-up edit

Today's work is removing the spurious "Status" collumn (it's POV and they're all uncited) and yanking those terms that are not simple collective terms. 5 keys is not a "ring of keys" unless the keys are on a ring. 5 kittens is not a "box of kittens" if there is no box. 5 random maps is not an "atlas of maps". And so on. As usual, if you disagree with any of my calls, feel free to add them back, with cites to reliable sources. Likewise, if you disagree with any I leave, feel free to yank them. - SummerPhD (talk) 17:44, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have added cite needed tags to the uncited items (virtually all of them). In a month or so, I'll yank any that remain uncited. - SummerPhD (talk) 17:17, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I started to go through and delete the uncited items, until I realised that there would be none left at all. It looks like they're all uncited now. Not a single cited source. I didn't want to blank the page, but maybe someone could nominate the page for deletion instead. I'm sure there are a few valid ones in there, but I'm not sure Wikipedia is the place for it. 36 Puns Removed edit

This was the most badly mangled wiki page I have ever seen. I have done some research into collective nouns and so have removed 36 entry’s. Most belonged on some shitty geocities pun site. Some were mildly funny but never the less a real pain in the ass for anyone doing research. “A gaggle of women” I am removing because it is not common usage and is derogatory, to geese! I call bullshit on "a zeal of zerbras" as It seems to be a too good to be true/ made up Americanism to me from my limited research. “A flock of tourists” I am leaving in because they do indeed flock. Sorry about the formatting errors, the M information has decides to go party in N town and everything goes ait weird after P. I’m using pain txt from notepad so cant think how any bogus MS formatting has crept in from my end. Wikis are temperamental beasts, be glad if someone can tell me where I went wrong :-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tha sprayah (talkcontribs) 22:34, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Typo for Spiders edit

It looks like a simple typo, but "clutter of spiders" should be "cluster of spiders" as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_collective_nouns_by_collective_term_A-K and all other online sources. I have fixed it now. 60.234.140.4 (talk) 09:48, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Some citations edit

I'm too much of a novice to put in these references without buggering up, could someone more experienced stick them in. I hope there alright.

Special cases edit

In similar articles (such as List of collective nouns by subject A-H), there has been discussion re "special" groupings. For instance, while any group of people might be a "crowd", the terms "mob", "family", "team", etc. are special cases. A family is not merely collection of people, it is a specific group of related people. Similarly, the stairs in my house are not a "flight" of stairs (as there are two flights with a landing in between). - SummerPhD (talk) 14:27, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
