Plan to replace this article
editI have been working on a replacement for this page for much longer than I care to admit. I keep finding new information and can't seem to get it exactly like I want. I thought I would discuss this replacement with yawl who already have invested so much time in the existing one. I started with all of the existing information. I have presently increased the number of canals from 52 to 130 with at least 30 more I have to look into. I made the columns sortable and added fields like length, number of locks, and location within France. Any thoughts, suggestions, or comments? GloverEpp (talk) 14:07, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- Looks good to me, nice work! Some minor comments: you may want to check the title of one of you sources, I don't think "vois" is correct French. The title according to the Bibliothèque de France is "France : Itinéraires fluviaux". The Sandre database (see this example is a valuable source as well. Please change the length heading to "navigable length", since most rivers are only partially navigable. And maybe a note for canals that have been abandoned. BTW Petite Saône and Basse Saône aren't canals, they're canalised parts of the river Saône. Markussep Talk 15:17, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG, I misspelled the book title in some 45+ articles. Is there a global change bot available? I agree that some of these entries are not canals, but rather canalized rivers, or in some few cases, just navigatable rivers. GloverEpp (talk) 17:15, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- Great work on the table/list Glover; good job! I'm not sure about the lead though, better to just retain the original in current article as I don't think the "instructions" are necessary or appropriate. I'm trying to think of better wording for the "Connected body" column headings but I've not come up with anything yet. But these are minor points and I think you should be WP:BOLD and just go ahead and replace the table in the article. Nancy talk 16:24, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's not for lack of boldness that I am postponing. I have built it in Excell and its a lot easier to make global changes there than in Wiki. GloverEpp (talk) 17:15, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- In Excel? that's clever. How do you convert it to Wiki-markup - I'd do a lot more tabulation if I had an easy way to do it. Nancy talk 08:36, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Nancy, here you go. Built this just for you: User:Gloverepp/Using Excel for WikiGloverEpp (talk) 14:07, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Oh Glover you are such a sweetheart! I'll give it a whirl with something simple and see how I get along. Thanks so much. Nancy talk 17:06, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Wonderful table - I've always wanted one of those - thanks!! Renata (talk) 08:19, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Article replaced 4/23/2010
editI replaced this entire article, increasing the number of canals from 52 to 144. I added sort capability, length, number of locks, and approximate location within France. As with everything, it is not perfect.
The preceding version resides here (User:Gloverepp/List of canals in France Replaced April 23 2010), in case you wish to compare. I tried to use everything in this original article, and made corrections where needed. enjoy..... GloverEpp (talk) 19:56, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Aff
editHi Gloverepp, I see you reverted my deletion of "L'Aff" as an alternative name. I don't see the river name on the linked map you mentioned in your comment. Anyway, the "l'" version is just with the article, like "the Thames", not an alternative name. Markussep Talk 14:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- Go to 47°48′37″N 2°04′12″W / 47.81039°N 2.06989°W, ACME Mapper, Satellite, and click Terrain. The stream in the middle of the page is L'Aff according to this map. GloverEpp (talk) 15:32, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- I see the name now, but ACME also uses L'Oust, La Vilaine, La Loire, La Maine, La Vienne, Le Cher etc. etc. That's the article, not part of the name. Markussep Talk 18:50, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- Whatever. I have no dog in this fight. I just used the name I saw on the map. GloverEpp (talk) 19:09, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- OK, removed it. Markussep Talk 20:07, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
