Naming standard for government cabinets/ministries

edit

I have started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions, which will hopefully lead to a consistent naming standard for national government cabinets/ministries. See Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions#Naming of government cabinets/ministries to take part in the discussion. /Slarre 13:00, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Naming of Dutch cabinets

edit

This has been discussed before (see above, now archived here, see also the more recent language reference desk discussion), but no actions seem to have been taken. I'd like to propose the following naming standard, specifically for cabinets of the Netherlands:

  • "Name cabinet"
  • If there are more: "Xth Name cabinet"
  • If there are non-Dutch cabinets with the same name: "Name cabinet (Netherlands)"

Some examples:

Current title Proposed
Netherlands cabinet Rutte Rutte cabinet
Netherlands cabinet Balkenende-4 Fourth Balkenende cabinet
Netherlands cabinet Kok-1 First Kok cabinet

(As far as I know, but I haven't checked, there are no cabinets where the "(Netherlands)" disambiguation would have to be used).

Some reason for the proposed change:

  • There seems to be no basis for the hyphen in e.g. Kok-1
  • The "Netherlands" identifier is unnecessary, as there are no other cabinets of the same name, and if there were, a "(Netherlands)" identifier at the end is more usual.
  • In English, the word ministry/administration/government/cabinet seems to be used more often after the name of the person who heads it, rather than before.

I'd like some comments please :-) Mtcv (talk) 12:58, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to add that when a short name is needed, such as in this list and this template (show Cabinets), I propose to use "Name" and where needed "Name [Roman numeral]", e.g. "Rutte" and "Kok II". Mtcv (talk) 16:06, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
There have been no comments for over a week, so if nobody disagrees, I will start renaming these articles in a few days. Mtcv (talk) 15:34, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have changed the titles of the first 8 cabinets (from Schermerhorn-Drees to De Quay), I'll do some more later. BTW, someone should make the four Drees cabinets a bit more logical, because currently it's a bit of a mess. Mtcv (talk) 17:39, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

All post-WWII cabinets have now been retitled, and checked for double redirects. I might go on changing (single) redirects to the proper page names for a bit. Mtcv (talk) 12:54, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can we change the types of the cabinets? Parlement.com uses different types, which make more sense. In particular because right now the Den Uyl looks like an ordinary cabinet, but it was actually pretty unique since it didnt have a formal majority. Dajasj (talk) 11:58, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
