Is the Article Title Wrong?

I have to say I have a problem with the title of this article. The page is a list of bassists or bass players, or at least those that have reached great heights playing electric bass. They are not considered great guitarists. In the discussion on the bass guitar vs electric bass one comment was the memory of Jaco Pastorius was discounted by refering to him as a guitarist. I agree with that comment.

Should the page title be List of Modern or Contemporary Bassists?

No. The point of the article is that it's people who play the bass guitar, as opposed to double bass, etc. A "bassist" is a general term for someone who plays a bass, whichever kind, but this is a list of bass guitarists. Jaco was both a bassist and primarily a bass guitarist, as double basses fell apart in the climate he lived in.

The problem with that last comment is that Jaco Pastorius referred to his instrument as an Electric Bass (research his books and videos). I have a Jazz Bass too, clearly labelled by Fender as an Electric Bass, under the category of Electric Basses in the Fender price list, designed and manufactured as an electric alternative to the Double Bass. I do not consider myself a guitarist when I play electric bass. I also have double basses, lived in the tropics and alpine regions and find it difficult to believe "double basses fell apart in the climate he lived in". Jack White

The place for him in "W" says that he played bass for Beck on Go It Alone for his latest album Guero, which is true. It also says that he played bass for several White Stripes songs, which is false, as The White Stripes do not feature bass at all in their songs. Non-notables

It seems that a lot of non-notables have been added to the list recently, or I've just become more aware of it anyway. The first lines of the page say:

“ This list of bass guitarists includes notable bassists for whom there is a Wikipedia article, or who are mentioned in articles. ... ”

Can I propose that this is amended to say that any entry that doesn't either have their own page or a mention in their band's page will be removed? For example, the opening lines of the list of guitarists page are a little more unambiguous, and its embedded comments

“ only add names here if the person has their own article or if they are mentioned in the band's article - anything else will be removed ”

leaves editors with no doubt as to what the policy is. I think that we should adopt the same policy here, as I don't think that it's terribly practical to have to trawl Google, Amazon etc for evidence to see whether or not someone is a notable musician every time someone enters the name of their mate in the highschool band. Of course that doesn't deal with people who create their own vanity pages, but I think that's another issue.

My suggestion doesn't seem to have generated a great deal of excitement so far (funny, that!) Can I say that if there're no objections by, say, friday the 8th that I'll go ahead with the proposal to change the guidelines for who should and who shouldn't be added? Just to reiterate, I'm not planning anything outlandish, just to implement the same policy that the guitarists page uses, since ours isn't very clear at present.

I am late reading your post but will add a quick comment. The nowiki rules don't exactly stop NN's from being added(everyone likes to self-promote) to the List of guitarists article. But at least they let the editor know what's going to happen if they drop a red link in. I notice the same thing in the Guitar/Bass model articles which all seem to contain "notable player" lists. These lists tend to spiral into POV favourite lists if they aren't monitored. I'd say go ahead and post the rules. At least then the law will be laid when it comes to dead links. I have this page in my VandalProof watch window. I will check in to see that the rules don't get deleted once they're added in. Cheers Anger22 00:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Okay, since there were no objections, I've done that now: I've just used the wording of the existing comment at the top of the article (the one that I even missed myself) and displayed it under the "this list is incomplete" message; hopefully it's not too obtrusive but still noticeable. As with the list of guitarists, I've also added the notice as a comment at the beginning and end of each section. It probably won't stop people adding themselves because they're in a school band, but at least now they can't say they weren't warned when they're removed again!

Vandalism?

I've just noticed a clearly vandalising edit made apparently by me some time ago, which I had absolutely no knowledge of and don't know how it was made in my name. I know most people probably won't care but this annoyed me when I found it since not only would I never do anything like this, the edit blanked a previous, legitimate edit of mine. Again, I'm sure it doesn't matter, I just wanted to clear my name and make sure nothing came of it. Offski 23:51, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I added a bunch of bassists out there. Many are from metal bands, but they are also from other sorts of rock bands. If someone is unhappy with the edits done, talk to me. All of the 52 bassists I added are on Wikipedia or have their band on Wikipedia.

Change

I've changed the heading to "Only add names here if the person has their own article - anything else will be removed" as list is getting too many red links or no links at all. I added Justin Meldal-Johnsen; bass player known best for his work with Beck. I also linked to Beck in parentheses... it seemed succinct enough to just list it as that. Lead Singer/Frontman

I would like to see how many bass players were the frontman or lead singer for their band/group. There are not that many and is kind of interesting when you see one: Geddy Lee (Rush), Sting (The Police), Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), Les Claypool (Primus). • Disagree Firstly, I assume you mean male bass guitarists, not "make bass guitarists".
  Allowing for that correction, your statement "this list article is exclusive to male bass guitarists" is clearly incorrect as, working up from the bottom, Regina Zernay, Tina Weymouth, Tal Wilkenfeld, Kathy Valentine, Kathy Valentine, Iracema Trevisan and numerous other females appear in this list.
  Splitting male and female sounds easy, until we have to include/exclude a cisgender, transgender, or other bassist who does not want to be sexually pigeonholed. Rather than further sub-division under sexual stereotypes, I propose the List of female bass guitarists is included in this list. - Arjayay (talk) 19:37, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

• Strongly Disagree While it is true that male bass players are in the majority, there are a significant number of female bass players on the List of bass guitarists so the article title conforms with the Wikipedia article title policy. The list should remain inclusive of all bass players regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or ethnic background. It is incumbent on the majority to honor, respect, include and promote those in the minority. There is a List of female bass guitarists which helps to raise awareness of women in music, but this list does not preclude inclusion in the master List of bass guitarists.
