Talk:List of basketball players with most career points

Latest comment: 4 months ago by Kikimaru in topic Outdated & wrong

The article is misnamed

edit

The intent of this article is to list basketball points scored in the lifetime of players. One's "career" has nothing to do with amateur play in college and arguably other instances. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.80.201.90 (talk) 02:48, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This seems correct to me. This article doesn't seem to have a consistent position on which points should be counted, it only recently switched to totaling (some) amateur points as well, apparently in response to Lebron passing Schmidt in professional career points. We need to decide which points should count in the tally and which shouldn't and then uniformly apply that to each player.
I would propose that the tally should include professional and national team play only, both because those are what would typically be understood to be the games you would consider when asked about a player's "career" and because including amateur games opens up a huge bag of worms. There's no reason to stop at high school if we're looking at all amateur games, pretty much every elite player in the US would have played on AAU or other travel teams, as well as organized leagues earlier than high school. Outside of the US players are certainly playing in other organized leagues in the same age ranges. Trying to capture all of the amateur points scored for every player would make this a mess and more driven by which point totals are available than anything a typical reader would think of as the player's "career." Suggestion

Should add NBA playoff points as well. 2804:1B3:6601:96F3:95D:70A4:6DFB:92FD (talk) 19:50, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, those points should count. In the total amount of Oscar Schmidt 2,009 points were in Valladolid. 168 points are from PlayOffs in the season 1993-94 against Murcia. The playoff point should count for every player

Can anyone please full-fill this list to all & every formal & recorded games . because this list lacks many such games : pre-season games , play-in , in-season Vegas finals , formal - recorded friendlies , ect . ect . Thank you . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.57.90.173 (talk) 11:40, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Outdated & wrong

This entire list is woefully outdated. It's missing players like Kevin Durant, Dan Issel, Tim Duncan to start. Kikimaru (talk) 02:42, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have updated the list to only include players with 30,000+ points in professional settings Kikimaru (talk) 13:39, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Points from Oscar Schimidt and Lebron James College that should be included on this list

edit

Oscar have 393 points in 15 games on State ( São Paulo ) selection and 569 points in 31 games Brazilian selection as a College as you can see on his official site https://www.oscarschmidt14.com.br/numeros

Lebron have 487 points in 27 games on High School in 99-00 Season, 694 points in 27 games on High School in 00-01 Season, 756 points in 27 games on High School in 01-02 Season, 730 points in 25 games on High School in 02-03 Season

Just an observation : When you sum the total points of Oscar Schimnidt it's missing the All Star game points on total calculation that needs to be corrected. 186.209.52.26 (talk) 11:41, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

LeBron James never went to college, he was drafted straight of out high school. However, college points should not go on a player's "career" since it is an amateur league. Kikimaru (talk) 12:47, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
