Casablanca class?

Why are there no Casblanca Class carriers listed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.123.249.97 (talk) 09:09, 3 March 2004 (UTC)

Those were escorts, see List of escort aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stan Shebs (talkcontribs) 09:12, 3 March 2004 (UTC)

No " - " in ship name

In official government documents there is no " - " in the ship classification name, (LPD 17, no LPD-17), though it seems to be common everywhere else. I think that the name should be changed to reflect the Navy's naming convention — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reflex Reaction (talkcontribs) 18:52, 23 February 2005 (UTC)

The article is somewhat confusing, the column names make it seemn like the ships are the same as the ships on the right, as oposed to a list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gamblor (talkcontribs) 13:15, 26 February 2005 (UTC)

HULL DESIGNATION OF NUKE CARRIERS

The CVN Carriers were originally designated CVAN to indicate that they were numbered in the CVA group. SSG Cornelius Seon (Retired) 19:46, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Status update with dates requested

Status gives dates only for sunk ships; it would be useful to see the dates for decommissioning/scuttling/cancellations/etc. as well.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 18:35, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Apmhib Carriers

While the US Navy does not classify its LHA and LHD ships as carriers, they meet the definition of carrier and are larger then most of the rest of the worlds aircraft carriers. These ships ought to be listed in here as well. Since the list includes zepplins, Tarawas and Wasps can also be mentioned. Alyeska (talk) 19:37, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

These can be found here: List of United States Navy amphibious warfare ships Ng.j (talk) 13:38, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

President's Name

Is it just me, or are new Aircraft Carriers named only after US Presidents? Is this true? When did this start?

205.160.23.2 (talk) 21:29, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Not entirely. The carriers are named by the Navy, but Congress has gotten involved by passing bills requiring that the carriers be renamed after famous political figures. This is mostly Presidents, but also some non Presidents such as the Carl Vinson. Alyeska (talk) 23:44, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
First US carrier named for a president was FDR (CV 42). Every carrier since JFK (CV 67) has been named for an individual. Prior to that, US carriers were generally named for famous battles/places, although there were several named after people (Langley, Franklin, Randolph, etc.). See List of aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. Since you asked, naming a carrier for, say, George Washington or some other near-universally known person is one thing, but naming one for pure political reasons (Vinson, Stennis, Ford) is pretty tacky... It's very tacky, and the last four have all been Republicans. Does anyone have a reference to the controversy of this? 67.169.49.52 (talk) 10:20, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Aircraft Carrier Builder/Shipyard

It Would nice to add to the table an additional column listing the shipyard where the carrier was built. Wfoj2 (talk) 23:27, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
