What is a "rebel group"?

I think a clear definition may be useful. E.g., I would call the United States Democratic and Republican Parties "rebel groups", as breakers of U.S. and international law. However, this would mean that any group could qualify as a "rebel group". Perhaps something like "groups challenging the current group in power"?Greedyhalibut (talk) 00:26, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

May be non-governmental political groups violently challenging the UN-recognized central government in a country. I'll add it. Thanks. --Againme (talk) 11:33, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Then what about counter-revolutionary or vigilante groups that challenge the law by taking it into their own hands with acts of terrorism, but don't actually aim to overthrow an established UN recognized government? Tawhid Movement and Muslim Brotherhood

The Tawhid Movement and Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt have been recently added to this list. I am skeptical of both, because both of these groups are not currently "seeking change through armed conflict in opposition to an established government or governments". The Tawhid Movement does appear to have its own militia, but this militia is not actively fighting against the Lebanese government. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt seems to be defunct after the crackdown on them. --HighFlyingFish (talk) 19:36, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Hezbollah

Just like the Tawhid Movement, I think Hezbollah also should not be on here. They are not fighting against the Lebanese government, and in fact, according to the wiki page on them, "in August, Lebanon's new Cabinet unanimously approved a draft policy statement which secures Hezbollah's existence as an armed organization and guarantees its right to "liberate or recover occupied lands"." Clearly, both of these groups are paramilitary organizations with their own armies, which have fought their own wars and are not under their government's control, but they are not currently fighting the Lebanese government so do not qualify as rebels IMO. --HighFlyingFish (talk) 04:49, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Palestine Liberation Organization

Why is the PLO listed as a rebel group? It has been recognized by Israel as "the representative of the Palestinian people", and the UN recognized the PLO as a "non-member observer state". Its not actively fighting against Israel, but instead controls its own unrecognized country, so it should not be on this list IMO. --HighFlyingFish (talk) 19:39, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Golden Dawn

An editor recently removed Golden Dawn from this list. Why? They are illegal in Greece (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/18/greece-ban-golden-dawn-pavlos-fyssas) and they have committed violence against Greeks, and seek to violently alter that state (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/11/world/europe/as-golden-dawn-rises-in-greece-anti-immigrant-violence-follows.html?_r=0). I removed it. The party is not illegal, they just had their state funding removed. If you read the article you posted, it just said that there was a bill proposed to ban it, not that it had been banned. The party itself does not conduct attacks on greek interests, it is not in rebellion rather individual members of the party have committed some violent crimes. The party itself has condemmed the actions of these individuals and i havent seen a source anywhere that says they order attacks on greek government interests. Indeed they would have little cause to, the party has 18 seats in the countries parliament.XavierGreen (talk) 18:35, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta-Anarcho-Communist?

Can anyone provide a source for the claim that MEND is anarcho-communist? There's no mention on their Wiki page, and a quick Google search didn't pull anything up. If anything, I'd say they're more nationalist or possibly even separatist, with some religious aspects added recently to oppose Boko Haram and other perceived Islamist threats. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.112.160.209 (talk) 21:32, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Ivory Coast?

Removed Section

The Israel section consisted of the following content.

• The Popular Resistance Committees (Islamist)
• Palestinian Islamic Jihad (Islamist)
• Zionist Army of Israel - Calling for Israeli control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip (Jewish Nationalist)[citation needed]

Hamas

"The Popular Resistance Committees", "Palestinian Islamic Jihad", and "Hamas" are all already on the list as operating under "Palestine" and can't be on the list twice. The "Zionist Army of Israel" is a reference to the Israeli Defense Force which is a government military which by definition is not a rebel group. The citation needed tag had a date of Jan 2014 without any update since then. 74.101.230.94 (talk) 20:53, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

New Syrian rebel groups

Many new Syrian rebel groups have emerged such as the Ansar al-Deen Front. Also, the Islamic State strength has increased dramatically. I will provide a source. Does anyone object to these changes? DylanLacey (talk) 07:25, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Cote D'Ivoire

Someone added the Forces Nouvelles of Cote D'Ivoire to "Groups who control territory", but neither of the sources says that they currently do so. Both appear to be referring to the situation in 2011. Any objections to me removing Forces Nouvelles from the list? GeoEvan (talk) 02:40, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

No objections whatsoever. The only information I've been able to find regarding recent activity is that there have been some minor attacks by small numbers of individuals, but they certainly don't hold any 'in the real world' territorial power, and their 'government' in exile. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 21:23, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Tons of Mistakes

This article needs to be rewritten because

• Most of the information is outdated
• Many Groups that are major rebels are not added in respective countries
• ISIL is not added as a International Rebel
• Many Countries with no rebels are mentioned
• PLO is added as a rebel in Palestine . They are regonized by Israel and UN and are not rebels
• Many paramilities that fought against rebels with support of Goverment are added as rebels (eg shia groups in Iraq)

So I am going to edit this article and requst you all to discuss any misinformation here before editing it

Adding ideology / reason for fighting in the table

Are there any complaints to adding ideology or reason for fighting to the table of rebel groeps? This can make it a lot more clear what the groups do. Bonnom (talk) 19:00, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

@Bonnom: Essentially, that might be a sinkhole for your editing time. Much in this list is badly referenced, and it would probably be a better starting point to go through the hatnotes leading to the main articles, as well as the articles on each group, in order to ensure that the group and 'rebellion' is/are still current. Eliminating outdated content would go a long way towards determining potential changes in the presentation (i.e., whether hatnotes suffice, and whether expanding minimally on the context is desirable or not). --Iryna Harpy (talk) 02:35, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

@Bonnom: I have no objection to your proposal, and you can find a lot of that information in the articles about the individual rebel groups. I'll second Iryna though that, if you want to go through the whole list, you'll find a lot of questionably referenced or outright outdated content However the "groups that control territory" section is fairly well maintained, and the only one that's currently a table anyways, so you can start there and that should be a much easier task. --HighFlyingFish (talk) 04:25, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Extent of ISIL Control and Al Waleed

@Iryna: Al Waleed is back under Iraqi government control. See here: http://www.iraqinews.com/iraq-war/shia-militia-with-international-coalition-liberate-waleed-along-syrian-border/ and its parent article. Per this map https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_Civil_War_(2014%E2%80%93present)#/media/File:Libyan_Civil_War.svg ISIL in Lybia no longer controls territory. Per their parent article at Boko Haram the same is now true of Boko Haram (see here for example http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/189748-boko-haram-camps-wiped-out-nigerian-military.html for source).
