Noticed all mention of ratings in USCG articles led to the USN one! Started this page by copying the the US Navy one, But it's going to need a lot of work to get it finished, Please help. A list of USCG ratings groups to use as an editing is listed at the bottom. I started the Aviation group. GCW50 09:54, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Under the Boatswains mate rating it states "The most versatile rating in the Coast Guard, and the only rating that can lead to a command position." This is incorrect the ET, Electronics Technician Rating, can also lead to a command position. ETCS, Senior Chief Electronics Technician, is the officer in charge of a communication station. Additional ET's would serve as officers in charge of LORAN C stations before they were taken off line.--TheGreenMachine79 (talk) 05:34, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Also, the old RM's all became TC's (Telecommunication Specialists) not IT's. This changed after the USCG quite monitoring and requiring us to know Morse Code and monitor 500KHZ. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.166.233.58 (talk) 21:06, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Semantics

This article states that rate and rating are separate things, but in the Coast Guard (Active duty as of 2019) we use them interchangeably. We use the term rank instead of rate in reference to your pay grade. I believe the article which was used as the source is for the USN, and while many traditions are the same between the two branches, in this regard they are incorrectly attributing this to the coast guard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.122.37.231 (talk) 00:56, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Rate is like your paygrade, i.e. E-5. Your rate would be petty officer second class. A rating would be machinery technician second class. This is what has been used in the Coast Guard historically and is still in use today officially.

One of my pet peeves is when you ask someone what their rating is and they reply "E-5". E-5 is a paygrade and I can tell from the persons uniform what their rate is. When I asked the question, I was interested in what rating they are...their job so to speak. Rate and rating are not interchangeable and the Coast Guard does follow naval tradition on this matter. Officers don't have a rate, they have rank; enlisted have rate. If you have a question about this or any other matter, "Ask the Chief"; chances are that they are in-the-know or know where to find the answer. Semper Paratus! Old retired Coast Guardsman sends...
