Talk:List of TED speakers

Keep convenience links to speaker’s TED talks edit

I have reverted the deletion of the convenience links to each speaker’s TED talks. The advantages of having these convenience links for our readers (see Wikipedia:Convenience links) makes having them in this list, a justifiable exception to WP:EL. Many readers who consult this list will want to find the TED talks of the speakers. We should not make that harder for them.

Without these convenience links a reader has to find the link in the speaker's Wikipedia article, OR search for the TED talks(s) on the web. Why should we put out readers to this extra work and time, just to meet WP:EL? This is clearly one of the cases, where an exception to a content guideline has to be made. — Lentower (talk) 01:22, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Lentower. There is a link at the bottom of this article that contains TED talks by speaker, no? The reader doesn't even have to perform the less-than-difficult task of googling "TED Talks %Name%" to find them... In fact, I'm sure that link is probably updated far more reliably and timely than this article. This is a promotional link farm for TED and violates WP:EL in spirit and letter. Thanks, Stesmo (talk) 16:51, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Stesmo. The place for the TED Talk links is in the external links section of each notable subject's article. I also agree we should remove speakers w/o an article as suggested below. Skyerise (talk) 17:04, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Glad that this wasn't forgotten. Let's remove the rest. --Ronz (talk) 21:11, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Perahps a better solution would have been to keep the links, but as citations/ footnotes? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:40, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Remove non-notable speakers edit

It has become a guideline-in-practice to only have notable entries on Lists in the English Wikipedia. That is, entries that have articles. (Note the essay WP:WTAF.)

The non-notable entries should be commented out, and the article's lede edited to reflect the change in inclusion policy. Many TED speakers without articles meet WP:N or will in the future. Leaving them in the list, but commented out, will make it easy for editors to add the entry to the list for new articles, and find new article candidates.

An alternative would be to move the non-notable entries to an article under this talk page, as a list of possible new articles. (Perhaps Talk:List of TED speakers#Review for article creation?) — Lentower (talk) 01:22, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Either keep the links (and keep them as inlines) or delete the article. It's pointless without them. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:12, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome to start work on having the article deleted. --Ronz (talk) 21:11, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • I'd ask if you had anything positive to contribute, but having seen your "I'm only here to delete ELs, no matter what their value" style of editing before, I already know the answer to that.
What do any of the better and more objective editors think about this article? Andy Dingley (talk) 21:30, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
External links must be in the references or external links sections. It is specifically prohibited to have named (linked from text) external links in the body of any article, including list articles. Wikipedia is not intended as a directory to external resources (see WP:NOTLINK): list articles are intended solely as a directory to related Wikipedia articles. Skyerise (talk) 21:55, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is one of the lists that demonstrates the need for better notability criteria for lists. We already have the category, which is by its nature restricted only to notable speakers. What's the non-promotional value of this list? --Ronz (talk) 23:13, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • The external links should remain out of the article. List articles should include notable entries that link to other Wikipedia articles, not external content. WP:NOTLINKFARM, WP:EL#EL20, and WP:ELMINOFFICIAL make this quite clear.- MrX 16:17, 16 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata edit

All TED speakers and talks (that appear on the TED website, and so have a TED ID) are now in Wikidata, so this article could be populated, and updated as new ones are added, automatically, from there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:21, 30 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
