I've been wondering whether the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy is an example of this. A little provincial newspaper in Denmark printed some cartoons of Muhammad, which would not have been widely seen outside the paper's relatively small regular readership, but the local Islamic community called on the whole Islamic world to protest, with the result that the cartoons have become very widely known. It seems to me that this is an example of the Streisand Effect if the intention of the protesters was to have the images banned. However, if their intention was more cynical, to publicise the images under the guise of indignation in order to whip up anti-western sentiment, then it is not really the Streisand Effect. Personally, Streisand Effect does not apply here since censorship was not the controversy's prime goal. But the important thing is whether reliable sources describe it as a Streisand Effect, from a Wikipedian perspective. Catalk to me! 07:55, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
