These words are grouped by the source language, even though many of

them entered Spanish from an intermediary (example: albergue is ultimately from Germanic, but entered Spanish by way of [[Provençal language|Old Provencal]]). Names of ancient tribes, names of languages, and words denoting a person's ethnic group or nationality are included. Words not included, among others, are personal names, place names, names of mountains, rivers, cities, etc. as the list would become too expansive and there are other lists which can cover these lexical items. Many of these words have related forms (estampar and estampada) which are not included here unless, for various reasons, their relationship to each other is not obvious. Many of these words also contain Latinate affixes (example: in "alcantarilla," -illa is a [[dimunutive suffix]]) and components but have at least one component from another language (example: béisbol). Latin contained many words of [[Ancient Greek]] by the the time the Romans became involved in Iberia and those words are not included here except when 1. they were introduced to Spanish through a language other than Latin (example: albaricoque is from Ancient Greek but enter Spansih through Arabic) or 2. the word is attested in Greek, but is thought to stem from some other language (example: celta). Words which derived from attested Latin words are only included when 1. The Latin word is known to derive from another language except Ancient Greek (example: barca) 2. The Latin word is thought to have dervied from another language (example: batir). The Greek and Latin words will be grouped under "uncertain derivation." Some of the words grouped under "uncertain derivation" are documented, but are examples of onomatopoeic creations which can't be definitively attributed to a particular region or timeframe.--Hraefen 15:40, 16 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

There are often competing theories for word origins. If you know of

a competing theory, feel free to add information about this alternate theory after the word and add your reference to the list of references, but do not remove this word from this list because it is sourced. Definitions are currently not given, but they will be. Some of these

This Germanic diminutive suffix -ken, -kin, -chen etc. is included in the Middle Dutch section (maniquí) to illustrate that this suffux, in its various forms, is present in North, West, and East Germanic languages as well as this Spanish word. This page is full of bad links. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. It is nearly always inappropriate to link to common words, and doing so all too often leads to a disambiguation page (which is not a dictionary either, and should never be linked to). Origin of Words edit

Probably a greater number of the words is wrongly attributed. At least, those in the upper part. (I'm no linguist and won't examine the origin of the words, only mention some examples)

- barón: Where does "barón" mean "male"? That's "varón". In fact, "barón" also exists - meaning "baron".

- dalia, sandwich, wagneriano ... "Napoleonian" is a romance word? buganvill(i)a: Mr Bougainville has Germanic roots?

- "luna de miel": "luna" isn't Germanic. "miel" ?? (Not too improbable that the expression developed from "honeymoon". Would that make it a word of Germanic origin? Furthermore, one should examine if "honeymoon" isn't derived itself - maybe from French "lune de la miel")

- bulevar= "boulevard". That looks strange since boulevard is obviously French. However, "boulevard" has Germanic roots.

- "guagua" = bus: I know "guagua"=baby from Chile. The dictionary tells me that "guagua" is used on the Antilles and Canarian Islands as "bus". Is that "car-car"?

There are also words which I suspect to be English words of Spanish or Romance origin. Finally, I hope that this list expands and becomes really useful one day. PS: "kuchen" is definitively missing (from German "Kuchen", XIXth century?) de:Waifar 84.178.71.35 15:36, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removed the "torres" surname since it origin isn't related to thor's son, instead it comes from the spanish word for towers (from latin "turre") and was given as a nobiliary title probably during XIV century. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.165.101.204 (talk) 00:46, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Purpose of the Sections edit

What is the purpose of the various sections: Letters A-Z, then Specific Language of origin, plus a section labeled 'Germanic'? Are they not all Germanic? For those under A-Z, are these words where the exact origin is unknown? --If so, then perhaps an "Unknown" section? It just seems very haphazard because it is partly organized, partly not.
