Individual Articles

If I have a good amount of information about any characters on this list, is it appropriate to write an individual article about them? These will not be just one-sentence stubs; I have pictures, lists of famous skits, etc. Would anyone be opposed if I did this? Lycanthrope777 01:22, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Here's content from a Muppet Central forum, to be added to the article.

1 Ernie has Ernestine with him and tries to teach her to say his name. He keeps at it, even breaking down his name into two syllables and banging two small blocks to get his niece to say "Er-Nie." But no matter what, she just won't say his name. Then Bert enters the room and closes the door behind him. We hear Ernie's classic greeting of "Hey Bert!" and then we promptly hear Ernestine say excitedly "Bert!" Guess she inherited some of her uncle's ability to frustratingly annoy others. 2 The other sketch involving Ernestine was one where Ernie tries to find similarities between the two of them and describes what she looks like, sort of. He says that these are the following differences. Ernie: I'm a boy and Ernestine's a girl. I have dark and funny hair, and she has light (blonde) and curly hair. She wears a bonnet and I don't wear a hat. I'm wearing a striped shirt and hers is plain (probably light blue or yellow). And of course I'm big and she's little. So no, I just can't find many things that make us the same, but I still love her. And then he laughs his Ernie-laugh, followed by Ernestine who lets out the same laugh. 3 There's probably a sketch with Baby Ernestine, Ernie's niece, and Lily Tomlin's character of Ernestine the Telephone Operator, but I'm not sure as to such a sketch existing nor what happened should it exist. Third, there's a picture for people to color in of Ernestine in the coloring book, the New Who's Who on Sesame Street which I have as part of my collection.

Missing Characters

I'm responding to these notes way after the fact. As per the note below, according to Sesame Street Unpaved (p. 38), Snuffy's name is spelled "Snuffleupagus". I think that for the most part, the characters in this list should be listed by their first name, since that's how they're known, but I think there should be an exception for Snuffy and his name should be listed under "S". (Yes, today's SS talk page was brought to you by the letter "S".) That is how he's known, as as folks did above, they probably wouldn't be able to find him if he stays where he is. (How appropriate is that?) I also think that every character on this list should have a source (i.e., the above-mentioned book), to avoid anyone coming along and saying, "Oh, I remember that character when I was three". --Christine (talk) 16:50, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

You might be thinking of Rowlf the Dog, but he wasn't a Sesame Street character (despite a brief cameo very early on). He's a Muppet Show character. —scarecroe (talk) 14:43, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Top list versus alphabetical

So, what exactly is the difference between the list at the top and the alphabetical lists at the bottom? I suggest have the list at the top show only current characters, with both current and older characters on the alphabetical list.

Yah, I was wondering the same thing. I suspect that some inexperienced editors added characters, and instead of placing them in the correct order, they simply put them in the first table. This list needs some work, obviously. There's a reason it's no longer a FL. It wouldn't be all that difficult to improve it, and since I have some experience with the FLC process, I'm putting it on my to-do list. --Christine (talk) 16:40, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Snufalumpagus

Possible criteria for inclusion

I may be the only participant in this discussion, but I think we need to centralize all discussion regarding the criteria for inclusion in this list. It's my intention (since I need a break from History of Sesame Street) to go through this list and find sources for each character. If I can't find one, I will delete the entry.

In the meantime, I believe the following should be criteria for this list. Please add/delete/discuss as you see it.

• References. And by this, of course, I mean reliable and verifiable. It shouldn't include information gained from any Wiki, as great and valuable resources as they tend to be.
• No original research. Just because you remember the character when you watched The Show when you were three is not enough. If you can't prove it by a reliable, third-party source, it will be deleted.
• Dates and performers. Again, if there is no source for the time period of the character's existence, the information shouldn't be included. Also again, if there is no source that states the name of the performer--well, I don't want to repeat myself.
• Descriptions. I'd like to see a source for all information included in the "description" cell. Descriptions should not be added indiscriminately. Again, no OR.
• Episodes as sources. It is valid to use individual episodes as sources. However (and this could be up for debate), I think we should avoid adding new information about characters every time a new episode is aired. All descriptions should be already in print, or from the extra features in DVD compilations. --Christine (talk) 03:30, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

That would be fine. If anyone has access to those episodes, great. I don't, so I've been looking at those third-party sources. The problem with doing that, though, is that at least in the past several years, the credits haven't named the performers' characters. I haven't seen DVDs like "Old School", so I don't know what the credits are like there. And as I state above, the descriptions should be in print or on DVDs, and not from personal observations. --Christine (talk) 13:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

I wanted to add more to this, perhaps to further clarify what I meant by the above. It's been in my mind the last few days, especially since I regretfully had to delete Chris from the list, even though we had seen one of his episodes the same morning I made the deletion. I had to fight the urge to do exactly what I advise against above--"But I just saw him!" It was really hard. But I think that we need to stick to our guns and remain committed to the integrity of the list.

That being said, it brings up an important point. The credits in the more recent episodes of The Show list each performer, but not their roles. Until a DVD is released that has that information, I don't think episodes are reliable enough sources. It looks like to do justice to this list, I'm going to have to invest in DVDs like "Old School." Images

While images are good, I don't think the Abby and Cookie images qualify for use in this article under our non-free content guidelines. Powers ^T 14:05, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I understand. At this point, I'm just adding the images I'm able to find and work on qualifying them at a later time. I'm fully aware that the images may not be acceptable in the long run. See, I'm really bad about images; the policies regarding them confuse me. As a result, I let other editors deal with bringing them to acceptability, those who are able to keep all the policies straight. I figure that when we're done going through the list, we can elicit the assistance we need. (By "we" I mean "I", I'm sure you realize.) That doesn't mean that someone can tackle the problem before that, though. Actually, I'm a little surprised about how difficult it is to find free images of SS characters. I suppose I shouldn't be, though, since the SW is very protective of their character's images. In a perfect world, I'd like to see one image per letter, and of the character alone, without other characters.
