S. purpurea subsp. purpurea

edit

Just a question: why is it that I always see S. purpurea subsp. purpurea listed as forma heterophylla? I could never really understand this. Are there other formæ? Thanks. FUNgus guy 15:09, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for asking. There are indeed two forms, S. purpurea subsp. purpurea and S. purpurea subsp. purpurea f. heterophylla. The former is not listed, as I guess it is the "default" S. purpurea - do you think I should list it seperately? The same goes for S. rubra subsp. rubra.
For clarification on what these types mean, S. purpurea subsp. purpurea includes all the populations from NJ north. Forma heterophylla is an anthocyanin free form, whereas the typical form has a lot of red coloration in the leaves and flowers. Hope that helps. --NoahElhardt 15:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
