Talk:List of SFTP server software

Latest comment: 12 years ago by 93.183.212.10 in topic FileZilla

I think this is a bit confusing in relation to the page Sftp which basically says that SFTP can be one of three different things. But, this page is saying that it is one of those three and then provides a link which says SFTP but points to SSH_file_transfer_protocol. This seems a bit confusing to me.

I think this page should be more clear about which of the SFTP protocals it is refering to and the link should have the text SSH file transfer protocol.

I am going to make the link text edit myself... my first Wikipedia edit :-)

I won't make the other change (saying exactly which of the three protocols we are talking about) because I am not sure I know which is the right one.

I'm not generally against your change, but:
  • Any abbreviation has several meaning, that does not mean that we cannot use them. We should just link them to their proper meaning for particular context. What was done here.
  • There is lot of similar pages, like List of FTP clients, List of SFTP clients, with the same problem you see here. If you really mean it, you should "expand" the abbreviations everywhere.
  • BTW, if your link exactly matches page, you do not have to duplicate the link and the title: SSH file transfer protocol

FileZilla edit

I've removed the link to FileZilla, as it does NOT support SFTP. See: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3550 195.228.39.215 15:03, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

It does, i'm using it everyday —Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.20.161.169 (talk) 06:34, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

FileZilla Server does not support SFTP. It does support FTP and FTPS. FileZilla client also supports those and SFTP. FileZilla Server could perhaps be made to support SFTP in a number of ways (e.g., how KpyM does it) but currently it does not. 173.50.233.227 (talk) 14:41, 4 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

im also using FileZilla for SFTP on a daily basis — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.149.182.150 (talk) 22:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

FileZilla Server does not support SFTP! Simply does not, FTPS is not SFTP, this article is confusion for everyone, also FileZilla website states that they support SFTP, it's only for FileZilla client. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.183.212.10 (talk) 14:59, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Red links and ext links edit

I see that we have a lot of red links and ext links on the entries. I think these should be purged. Any objections? --DanielRigal (talk) 00:03, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

This page is a mess edit

Actually, it's the industry that's in a mess. SFTP is a really bad abbreviaton to use without disambiguation. I propose that we bin this page and include the information (which it mostly already is) in the Comparison_of_FTP_server_software page. Since Simple FTP is rather different, there is a case for having a separate "List of Simple FTP server software" page.

Alternatively, we could split this page into three: either three new pages plus this one as a disambiguation page, or three clear sections on this page...

List of SSH FTP server software (sftp)
List of Simple FTP server software
List of FTP over SSH server software (ftps)

This second option seems like hard work for little gain...

Missing software from the list edit

I can't help but notice that this list is missing 2 important pieces of software: WinSSHD and NULL Ftp Server . I'll try adding them to the page.
