Species

The current listing has 272 species. Of these 177 have been classified into the currently 16 subgenera.

There are a few species whose validity may be questionable. The inclusion of three cynomogli species may need to be revised as these rathe be subspecies rather than species. The status of the ovale species has been confirmed.

I will try to create pages for the remaining species of Plasmodium. The species remaining outside a subgenus all belong to lizards or birds with one exception - a species that infects tortoises. This may well be classified into its own genus at some point given that tortoises are quite distant from lizards and snakes.

The current recognised taxa may be further subject to revision once more DNA sequences become available so the numbers of species listed here should be regarded as at best provisional. Nonetheless this is probably as accurate a listing of the entire genus as is currently available. DrMicro (talk) 13:33, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

It may be worth noting that the species billbrayi may be a junior synonym of gaboni. If this is the case then this listing has only 270 species.DrMicro (talk) 13:36, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
