What's (not) in Perth
editThe initial list I compiled was from REIWA, I figured that would be the most accurate source. Some of the "suburbs" are questionable, eg Toodyay, but I figured Perth is expanding and it's probably accurate.
- Toodyay is definately not in Perth. The Perth Metropolitan Area's boundary is illustrated on this map [1] (look for the broken green line near Serpentine Dam, etc.) . It would be neat if someone could correlate it to local government areas to adapt this list as needed. --kjd 18:40, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks Kjd, I was looking for official information on the WA govt website but didn't see this document. When I get some spare time I'll start working off this map (unless someone else starts first). Meesham 00:03, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I've added the suburbs of Mandurah. My justification is if it's in the Perth UBD it's a suburb of Perth. Anyone disagree? cheers Nachoman-au 05:56, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Well wiki entries are bit problematic if they stretch the official designation. It's not that I disagree with your addition, somewhere in the text of an art somewhere there is needed a specific explanation as to what constitutes what. wiki consensus does not necessarily relate to reality out there! if there is a findable/accessible/retrievable map of the 'metro area' as it is officially viewed - you need to address that!User:SatuSuro
- I've just had a good look at the current StreetSmart, followed by a phone call to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI), and the Metropolitan Area Scheme Boundary is defined by the northern, eastern and southern boundaries of Wanneroo, Swan, Mundaring, Armadale, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Rockingham. Or, you can use the southern, western and northern boundaries of Gingin, Chittering, Toodyay, Northam, York, Beverly, Wandering and Murray. I would suggest that anything not inside the MASB should not be counted as a suburb of Perth—this means that Mandurah is out, 'cos it lives in the Shire of Murray. This may help Meesham and kjd. Chittering
editFrom the map link that kjd provided Chittering is outside the metro area, also I have only heard of one instance where anyone tried to call Chittering a suburb and that was during 1980's when a developer was trying to sell 5 acre farms in the area. A check of the shire web site doent have any referrence to being part of the perth metro area. The shires town planing scheme also doesnt refer to being part of the perth metro regional planning scheme.
Suggest/request that it is removed from the list Gnangarra 16:32, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Suburb vs Locality
editI've taken the liberty of adding a note about the usage of the term "locality" in the Western Australian LGA hierarchy. This is the preferred usage, especially at DoLA. I've also noted that several localities are "shared" between two (or more!) LGA's, and annotated Victoria Park with asterisks.
BTW, I agree with kjd and Gnangarra that Toodyay and Chittering are most definitely NOT suburbs—or localities—in "Perth". Nor is Pinjarra, tho' that is now being sold as a dormitory for commuters to Perth City. Gordon | Talk, 11 June 2006 @13:38 UTC
King's Park
editI've, er, excised (?) King's Park from the Perth City entry. StreetSmart 2005 and 2006 both show a LGA boundary around its entire perimeter -- it doesn't belong to any LGA: Perth, subiaco, Nedlands or Cambridge.
Just a suggestion, maybe King's Park should have its own entry in the List? OTH, it doesn't exist as a LGA... Gordon | Talk, 6 August 2006 @08:09 UTC
- It is possible another editor might know about how the Act determines that the authority that governs the Park might be its own equivalent SatuSuro 09:12, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's adminstered by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority. Operates under the BOTANIC GARDENS AND PARKS AUTHORITY ACT 1998 the act in full they control Kings Park, Bold Park and other areas. Gnangarra 11:53, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hey I told you so - they're in there! :) SatuSuro 12:27, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- yep lots of useful(useless) information clogging the grey matter. web site for Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority I think they might even be worthy of an article. Gnangarra 12:33, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hey I told you so - they're in there! :) SatuSuro 12:27, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Do we blame it on the number of children that we have? :) SatuSuro 13:26, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Na I think its this keyboard like the kids its developing a mind of its own. Gnangarra 13:36, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
I've entered Kings Park as a suburb in its own right, 'cos Mt Eliza Reservoir is actually part of West Perth... Please don't ask, just gape and wonder. Gordon | Talk, 20 August 2006 @08:30 UTC
I've removed references to KP in the artical as it isnt an LGA, or a burb of an LGA, I've left the reservoir there for now until I can get information on its status as I belive that it administered by BGPA for Water Corp and isnt subject to LGA controls. Gnangarra 08:27, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- The technicalities might well be worth an article in their own right! (ref your 6 August comment) Gordon | Talk, 28 October 2006 @13:59 UTC
- I agree its worthy of a seperate article but for now I really cant unscrable my brain enough to wade into the various legislative changes that created the situation, this also involved the splitting up of PCC with the creation of Vincent, Vic Park, and PCC (another possible article) Gnangarra 14:19, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Why change the LGA wiki-links?
editG'day Orderinchaos78. I'm puzzled. Why change all the LGA wiki-links back to the redirect pages, from my very hard work to get away from them? I'm puzzled because if you really wanted to see "City of ...", all that was needed was a quick change to the literal following the pipe ("|"). Gordon | Talk, 28 October 2006 @13:56 UTC
Comments for table of suburbs
editIn line with my observations above, I've taken the liberty of removing Chittering & towns from this table—if no-one removes Mandurah, I'll do it when I have some more time. BTW, big thanx to Nickj, this table is really fantastic! Gordon | Talk, 12 June 2006 @04:42 UTC
I've just removed Mandurah. I hope Wannaup and Wannanup are the same place! Gordon | Talk, 17 June 2006 @02:04 UTC
LGA formatting
editThere is differing views as to whether LGA's in this article should be formatted, for example, "City of Armadale" or just "Armadale". I actually see advantages in the former, as has been suggested by Gordon, and if asked to choose I would go with changing all of them to City of/Town of/Shire of so long as the alphabetic order as presently maintained is preserved. My main reason for favouring City of etc is that the LGA and suburb can be mixed up in the present format. What do others think? Orderinchaos78 (t|c) 10:45, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- noting that this is the "list of Perth suburbs" and therefore the LGAs shouldnt be here anyway, but if they are going to be then in the example "Armadale" is the burb and "City of Armadale" is the LGA and that IMHO is how they should be presented. Gnangarra 12:33, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- seeing as we seem to have some sort of consensus I'll change them now. (update: done) Orderinchaos78 (t|c) 17:44, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
DLI
editJust a note for all editors of Perth suburb articles - DLI have disabled History+of+suburb+names and replaced it with History+of+metropolitan+suburb+names - bit redundant as what is a suburb if not metropolitan? I've changed it in any existing articles I could find. Orderinchaos78 (t|c) 18:12, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Mindarie Marina.jpg
editImage:Mindarie Marina.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
