Talk:List of MPs elected in the 2010 United Kingdom general election

layout edit

Is it just me, or are many of the entries in the "previous" columns wrong? The preamble suggests that these columns are for the state at dissolution, but it appears to be the list as at 2005. For example, Peter Law has been dead for a number of years. 81.111.114.131 (talk) 12:55, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you're right. It needs to be updated for all the by-elections in the previous Parliament. Wereon (talk) 13:30, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
It seems it's also using the constituencies from 2005, many of which have been either abolished or renamed. 81.111.114.131 (talk) 13:47, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I created the page rather mechanically by just taking the last page and shifting elected MP into the previous MP column. I do think though that the page will be more valuable with a revamp though in layout before we start making the changes noted above for by-elections and boundary changes. I have a script to quickly change the layout of this page so I can run it over if we agree a new format. As a starter I suggest something like the following:ChrisUK (talk) 21:17, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

proposals edit

A (Proposal 1) edit

Constituency Current MP Elected MP at 2010 MP at 2010 dissolution Elected MP at 2005

We have the additional problem that the new, boundary changed constituencies do not have an incumbent. We can give the 2005 notional result and incumbent in the 'base constituency' but that would have to cope with the occasions on which the Boundary Commissioners have changed the party. Then there are special cases like Croydon Central: Conservative in the real 2005 election, boundary changed to notional Labour, but incumbent Conservative MP is standing as an Independent. Sam Blacketer (talk) 10:25, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not to mention constituencies like Rochdale, which is notionally Labour according to Rallings and Thrasher but Lib Dem according to both Baxter and Wells. I'd leave off the "previous" columns entirely. Wereon (talk) 12:35, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I looked to see what we've done with previous elections. I looked at Feb 74, which was subject to boundary changes - the BBC distinguished between them by adding quote marks around the verb where there was a change, so 'win' vs. win. Our list lacks a "previous" column, but then so do those for all elections prior to 2001. Since the Fifth Report seems to have left constituencies in tact by exception (such as the bizarre decision to retain Isle of Wight as a single constituency, despite its population being double the target size), there seems little point in even having a "previous MP" column. The question of whether a seat has notionally changed parties might be worth considering, but if the various predictions out there can't agree on which way they go it seems equally pointless. However, I think it would be sensible to indicate in some way that an incumbent MP has succeeded in being returned to Parliament, even if it's not for the constituency in which they previously sat (e.g. in Brent Central, where the candidates include two sitting MPs). 81.111.114.131 (talk) 13:19, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Wereon (talk) 15:38, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Playing around with ChrisUK's version, this might be the way to go - listing the notional holding party first, the member returned in 2010 and their party, then any previous service of the member in Parliament. Sam Blacketer (talk) 16:30, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Constituency 2005 Member returned Party Previous service

Constituency 2005 Member returned Party Notes
Llareggub Loony Joe Bloggs Buff MP for Llareggub North 1992-2010; defeated John Smith, MP for Llareggub South 2001-2005
I like the idea, but I'm not sure about the order. If I'm halfway down the list, which party does the new MP belong to? Since we're not going for WP:SORTABLE, what about this? 81.111.114.131 (talk) 17:56, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

A (Proposal 4) edit

Constituency Notional incumbent Member returned Notes
Llareggub Loony Joe Bloggs (Buff) MP for Llareggub North 1992-2010; defeated John Smith, MP for Llareggub South 2001-2005

I think I agree with Whereon - references to previous results are a minefield and don't add much to the article going forward. Readers can always refer to the appropriate historical page if they want to know the details of the previous MP. I also quite like the notes idea as well which gives flexibility to note special things on a per constituency basis.

Combining these two ideas, here's my proposal. The two middle colums are equal on 7 May. The 'sitting mp' column changes with by-elections (together with appropriate notes). At the time of the next dissolution, the 'sitting mp' column name is changed to 'MP at dissolution'.ChrisUK (talk) 20:05, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Vote on Formats edit

This page is getting a bit unwieldy to edit, but we can archive once a decision is made. Here's a summary table to post votes/comments into. Add in more rows as new proposals are developed ChrisUK (talk) 20:29, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

A vote? Wikipedia usually operates by consensus, and there's not been sufficient disagreements yet to warrant such a thing. Give it time... :-)
With regards to your proposal, at least some mention should be given of the notional result; perhaps we can add a "Rochdale note" if the sources differ regarding who should have won.
How about something like this? It's a bit convoluted, but it is an example. There would be a note at the top explaining that the notional incumbent from 2005 are from Rallings and Thrasher (or whoever), with the actual winner given in the case of by-elections. Wereon (talk) 20:50, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, fair enough, I agree that voting is not the wikipedia way. I was just a bit overwhelmed really by reading through the proposals and I wasn't really sure what the consensus was. But I'm prepared to wait - we have about three weeks after all......ChrisUK (talk) 21:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

A edit

Constituency Previous incumbent Member returned Notes
Llareggub Loony Joe Bloggs (Buff) MP for Llareggub North 1992-2010; defeated John Smith, MP for Llareggub South 2001-2005. Three-way marginal in 2005; Baxter gives this as a notionally Sensible seat. Bloggs was ennobled in 2012, leading to a by-election.
Llareggub b Buff (Joe Bloggs) Philip Normal (Sensible) See Llareggub by-election, 2012. Shock Sensible gain, on a 15.6% swing.

Can't support this - the scope is specifically "elected in the 2010 election". Notes should be restricted to where a sitting MP is involved, no details or commentary on the results. A sitting MP's note is "previously MP for ...", a sitting MP defeated is "X Y, previously MP for ... defeated", constituencies such as Brent Central can be dealt with on common sense. While we're at it, we've just had the first delay announced - death of a candidate in Thirsk and Malton. 81.111.114.131 (talk) 23:09, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reminder edit

Just a reminder that this list needs to be given a once-over to ensure that everybody in it is actually being linked to the correct article; in looking over it a few times last night as the results were rolling in (God bless Rogers Cable for carrying BBC World News on basic cable now!), I caught several instances where people were being linked to a dab page or to an incorrect article entirely. I corrected a few myself (e.g. Tom Clarke, Mike Weir, Robert Smith) where possible, although there were also some others where I wasn't able to locate, or got distracted from hunting down, a correct target — Gemma Doyle, for instance, currently links to a character list for a Libba Bray novel. Bearcat (talk) 17:22, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I intend to make sure it's finished tonight, and I'll check it all thoroughly then. ninety:one 17:49, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article content edit

Should this article not just be a list of the MP's that got elected? the info about the previous MP would be more suited to the Results breakdown of the United Kingdom general election, 2010 article. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 14:42, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

If the swing was to be included in that article, it would require the duplication of all the content from this article! Additionally, knowing how each seat changed hands is vital to this list, otherwise it is of no purpose other than a simple reference list of names. ninety:one 17:23, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

MP seat diagrams from Commons edit

See my post at Talk:House of Commons of the United Kingdom#Seating diagrams from Commons concerning choice of MP seat diagrams (meaning the quantity of seats rather than actual seat positions). -84user (talk) 16:31, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tory seats edit

Just wondering, why have we got the number of Tory seats as 304 when there are 305? TheRetroGuy (talk) 11:13, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The "Speaker and Deputies" entry shows 2. I assume that even though Sir Alan stood as a Conservative and was opposed at election, he has been counted there. 81.111.114.131 (talk) 22:55, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It should be 305 IMO. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 01:13, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Seems to make sense for there to be 305. I think usually only one Speaker seat is counted, with him/her not afiliated to a party and having the deciding vote. TheRetroGuy (talk) 18:35, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of all seats with results edit

I was looking earlier for a nice list of seats, with results, so I could easily sort by margin or vote share - I found none - can anyone point me to a source? --Speedevil (talk) 01:12, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

These data are not widely published in a form convenient to draw comparisons; I'd like to sort all MPs by share of the vote, for example. We could add columns for voter turnout, winning number of votes, and/or winning margin. The tradeoff is between data and presentation; should we add more columns and allow whole-table sorting on a 650-row dataset, or are there better ways of achieving this? WikiWikiPhil (talk) 12:10, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Excel spreadsheet available at the Electoral Commission website. There are simply too many results, with justice only being seen to be done officially if mention is made of all of the results, with which I agree. Each majority is over the long-term not notable and is not what the project is for, which is to emphasize non-news. Adam37 (talk) 20:42, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rushanara Ali under wrong party, someone good with wiki-code, please change it... edit

We have Rushanara Ali listed as with the Respect party, but she's not, she's Labour. I was going to change it but got daunted by the wiki-code. She's under the B constituencies. Can someone please change it? --bodnotbod (talk) 10:39, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The colomn that gives the Respect party for Ali's constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow denotes the notional incumbent party (e.g. the party, after boundary changes, which would sit for that constituency before the 2010 election), which in this case would have been George Galloway for Respect. The colour bar next to Ali is a slightly deeper red of Labour, and she has a piped "L" to Labour in brackets after her name. So there's no need to change anything in this case. Sort by member please edit

Please can someone devote a few hours if that to sorting this article by MP's surname with no alphabet key needed at the top and instead as a sortable table. The result would be a formidable encyclopedic table, similar to the non-political List of United Kingdom Parliament constituencies, and help us to set this article apart by making about candidates.

The order of columns is inherently confusing (see above comment) and notional incumbent should be noted to the right of the winner's name also.Adam37 (talk) 20:42, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in List of MPs elected in the United Kingdom general election, 2010 edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of MPs elected in the United Kingdom general election, 2010's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 02:53, 10 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Party counts edit

To save people having to count the coloured blobs, would it be possible to include a tally of how many seats each party currently holds? --Dweller (talk) 09:19, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

In response to this point, I have now included the appropriate template within this article. RedvBlue 09:35, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
