Character names edit

The Chinese characters for the animal names can be found at the Chinese KFP page, but I added the characters for the proper names used, as they are all puns or references. Note that most of the pronunciations are based on the Cantonese dialect and not the standard Mandarin Chinese. Vachir is a Mongolian name, but Mongolia uses Cyrillic now instead of the traditional vertical script. I couldn't find a Mongolian translation of Chorgom (I'd imagine it's just Mongolian for "prison") but corrected the spelling based on the final draft of the movie script. Note that the official website differs from this and has Chor Ghom. -LlywelynII (talk) 14:24, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Species edit

The KFP page has Monkey as a snub-nose; this has him as a golden langur. Neither is sourced, so I don't know which is more accurate.

Per the final script, Oogway is a niger, not a soft-shelled Chinese person like nate

Lord Shen is not leucistic but indeed Albino due to his completely white body and red eyes this has now been corrected but i will leave this here in case the mistake gets made again. If you have questions why he has colour this will explain whats going on https://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/c321x1/kung_fu_panda_2_lord_shen_purposely_colours_his/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jammygamer (talkcontribs) 00:16, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Similarly, Po's father Mr. Ping is a duck, while Zeng is a "palace goose." In the film, they look fairly similar except for coloring, one imagines to make life easier on the animators. None of the geese are Chinese geese, which have a large nob at the top of their bill, so I'm uncertain which kind of goose would be most appropriate or most like a pekin duck. -LlywelynII (talk) 14:30, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notability edit

This article has just as much, if not more, legitimacy as the article, Characters from The Incredibles, which is based one film with no foreseeable sequels beyond a Disney on Ice show spin off and its references its information almost exclusively .

Kung Fu Panda, on the other hand, is now definitely considered the first of a new film Dreamworks Animation film franchise with the second film in preproduction now. Therefore, this article has an equivalent legitimacy as List of characters in the Shrek series even though are almost entirely referencing from the films series itself.--kchishol1970 (talk) 16:23, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'll admit the Incredibles list is a little bit more refined than Skrek's, but both of those articles need to be deleted as well. They are just sloppy lists (one more than the other) of every single last character no matter if they even had the tiniest screen time. It's clear to me that no one is maintaining those pages. A very good example of this is the Superman in other media article. In this version, people have added the tiniest reference to superman from non-franchise music, film, and tv. Now, the current version has gotten rid of all non essential kruft. If someone went through and did the same to the Incredibles and Skrek lists, there would hardly be anything left.
Both articles do include info from accompanying video games, but have you read the Kung Fu Panda (video game) page recently? It's nothing but a cut-and-paste from the film's plot. I doubt the editor who created the page actually played the game. They are just assuming it's the same as the film. It could be different in some respect. --Ghostexorcist (talk) 16:52, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Kchishol1970, KFP is a much more notable film then the incredibles, and it has already promised a lineup of sequels. Plus, this list now has several references (more then the other lists), all from the official site. Congratulations for starting this article, I think as the sequels role out it could become an important page. Once the DVD comes out we will get some images for the characters, although probably just the main ones, because of fair use. Also, I'm getting the PC version of the game soon, so I'll do something with the article's plot once I have finished it. --Simpsons fan 66 09:03, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copyright questions edit

Many sections are copied outright from portions of the website. Should we re-write them or remove them altogether? Octane [improve me?] 07.09.08 0805 (UTC)

Yeah, we could probably re-write some of it, mainly the Furious Five sections. However I don't think it's possible to reword the parts on fighting style, since they are very specific and quite short. They are important to the article and can't be removed, but I'll see if I can change the wording. --Simpsons fan 66 22:54, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Po's "adoptive" father edit

This article states that Mr. Ping is Po's adoptive father, though that fact is never asserted in the film (or, for that matter, in the main article). In fact, the movie specifically avoids discussion of said possibility. So it seems like conjecture, fairly unfounded, to make that statement IMHO. Slinkygn (talk) 20:36, 22 September 2008 (UTC) Man, that was fast! Got beaten to the edit. :-) I figure it could also be good to do as the main article does, and address Mr. Ping as Po's "goose father" to clarify that, though there is no statement of his being adoptive, they are different species. Slinkygn (talk) 20:41, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you want an official statement, the artbook for Kung Fu Panda says "although it is not directly addressed, Po the panda obviously is the adopted son of Mr. Ping, the genetically-impossible-to-be-related goose." HS Yuna (talk) 19:52, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tai Lung edit

In the credits, quite a bit of info that affects the story is mentioned; Ping and Shifu become friends, Po shares the wisdom of the Dragon Scroll with the Valley, and Tai Lung is shown sparring with Shifu. I know that they are sparring because Shifu is using a practice stick, which is not used in combat. However, my edits were removed due to "orginal research", and I don't believe that's fair. Everything else in the credits is acknowledged, why not Tai Lung's sparring with Shifu? Both are shown to be content, and this opens us up to conclusions that can tie up the plot holes we feel the movie left us. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.217.25.15 (talk) 21:55, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

While I'm not certain, I don't think they are sparring- there's a black section between them and the background colours behind each are different, which to me indicates those are just 2 different sketches, not even scenes really. HS Yuna (talk) 20:03, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Images of the characters edit

To make the article look a little more presentable, I suggest adding images of the characters. Angie Y. (talk) 04:20, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

That would be against the fair-use policy. Way too many pics. Take for example the Avatar: The Last Airbender article. It was once a "Featured article" and had pics of all the major characters. However, after a FAR, all of the pics were removed and it wad demoted to "B-class".
I would suggest one single group photo of some kind.--Ghostexorcist (talk) 05:42, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
These links are of some good pics, but you would need to track down the source (i.e. dvd cover, movie poster, promotional advertisement, etc.)

Perhaps a group photo of the secondary characters can be found. --Ghostexorcist (talk) 05:58, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Prison spelling edit

The name of the prison where Tai Lung is held is spelled inconsistently in the article, understandably so as the various sources connected with the movie spell it differently as well: the script has Chogun, the website Chor Ghom, and the subtitles and artbook Chorh-Gom. I'm standardizing on the last here, as the subtitles are what the movie actually shipped out with and and a second source agrees.If someone can point to one of the other spellings actually having official status, feel free to change the spelling in the article. Character Ages edit

I keep seeing all these comments on the ages of the characters based upon the cartoon short. The cartoon short never mentions when the characters story is taking place. In other words we can't say that Crane and Viper are in their thirties because it is never stated how long before the movie Their stories takes place, could be five years or ten for all we know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.125.243.106 (talk) 19:28, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal edit

I suggest we merge Po into this article because I don't think he's notable enough for his own article. There's only one source in the article and that one is from the Official KF Panda website, IIRC. Just because he's the main character of a movie series, it doesn't mean he's automatically entitled to an article. Harry Blue5 (talk) 13:02, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Character ordering edit

In an attempt to make the article seem less in-universe, I propose we re-order the character listing not by specific character groups, but according to what films/media they first appear in.

To clarify, it would start with a section labeled "Introduced in Kung Fu Panda" and contain all the major characters appearing in that film, each occupying their own subsections. For characters who do appear in groups (such as the Furious Five), each group would make up a subsection and have each individual character in a smaller subsection (one for Tigress, one for Monkey, etc.). Once the characters are filled out, this section would be followed by a section labeled "Introduced in Kung Fu Panda 2," and will carry on as such for each major film installment. After that, there would be a final section entitled "Introduced in other media," which would include characters who appear in Secrets of the Furious Five, the holiday special, (perhaps) the upcoming Legends of Awesomeness, and any other forms of media that may come.

Here's a visual example:

==Introduced in ''Kung Fu Panda''==
===Po===
(text)

===Shifu===
(text)

===The Furious Five===
(text for the Five as a whole?)

====Tigress====
(text)

===Tai Lung===
(text)

==Introduced in ''Kung Fu Panda 2''==
===Lord Shen===
(text)

I don't know if this will do any good, but I cite my inspiration for this reformatting to be from the "List of Indiana Jones characters" article. While this article is unrelated in subject matter and doubtless contains issues of its own, and is certainly not considered a "good article," it is one of the most prominent articles in the "Lists of film characters" category in which its issues are (if you would forgive a personal opinion) the least glaringly obvious to me. However, since I am not entirely clear on the appropriate formatting of such articles, then if I were to be directed to the article that does contain such protocol, I would be more than happy to accept it. Canoncity of the Gongman Kung Fu Masters backstories edit

Seeing the film, Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters, the backstory presented about Masters Thundering Rhino, Storming Ox and Croc is in complete contradiction of the information on this page. Should the present information be simply replaced with the account from Secrets of the Masters now established as canon, or is that too simple a solution?

Page overhaul edit

I've noticed this list is not only in-universe, but it's also very long. It's so cluttered that I think it's time to give this page an overhaul, not only rewriting it so it can better fit Wikipedia guidelines, but also perhaps splitting it into other pages: characters who appear in the films, and those who are exclusive to other media (the TV show, video games, comics, etc.) User:Immblueversion (talk) 06:10, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to point out that I am currently working on a complete revision of the page to provide out-of-universe perspective, remove all original research, turn each section into a summary rather than a minute-by-minute recount of films and episodes, bring everything into present tense, etc. I will also rearrange the character subsections to reflect the films and media each character is introduced in. I plan to keep characters who are significant in the works they appear in, particularly those that appear in multiple mediums. User:Immblueversion (talk) 01:27, 25 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, that fell through, and still no improvements. The article's still roughly four times too long to read comfortably, so I'm putting up a notice. User:Immblueversion (talk) 23:48, 14 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
