List of Yeshivas? edit

I would like to applaud the efforts of the editor who created this page, however I have two comments:

1. The fact is, you titled this page "List of Yeshivas in the United States". I would like to propose that the actual yeshivos (gedolos and ketanos) be listed here, and if you so wish to have a page titled "List of Jewish educational institutions in the United States" then so be it and you can list everything else there.

2. The fact is-both here and on the "List of yeshivas" page, all you have listed are Institutions (many of which would not be considered yeshivos in any sense of the word) with URLs, and you have effectively ruined the encyclopedic nature of the list by tilting the list towards places with websites, instead of world-renowned yeshivos that do not. Please take this into consideration in the future-
if you wish to contact me on my talk page to discuss this I would be glad to. --Shuliavrumi (talk) 21:00, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not a repository of external links edit

This article is badly in violation of a couple of Wikipedia guidelines, mainly WP:NOTREPOSITORY, and Wikipedia:External links. This page has primarily been the project of a user who has been banned for sock-puppetry, and it appears that he or she is now continuing that work using different IP addresses. Sorry, but these links have got to go. If you want to build a list, write the articles first. Grayfell (talk) 05:53, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

No mexico? edit

Judaism in Mexico, seems like there are many communities in Mexico as well, and should be added here. OccultZone (talk) 08:36, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm having a hard time finding any articles for specific Jewish communities in Mexico. I added one that I found. (Reluctantly I included flags, which I think look very distracting.) I also found List of synagogues in Mexico, but it doesn't have a single source or any links, so I do not think it should be included. If you find more articles, by all means add them. Please don't just add links to external websites, though, per above. Grayfell (talk) 23:02, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Intent of this article? edit

Is this article intended to be a list of every single synagogue, yeshiva and Hebrew school in North America? Is it supposed to include Jewish day schools as well? This seems to be an unusual definition of "community"; I think most would consider a "Jewish community" to be a place where many Jews live; e.g. Brooklyn (or some of its neighborhoods) or Miami Beach. Very good questions. When this article was created (by a now-banned user) it was a collection of external links to synagogues, Jewish day schools, yeshivas, Hebrew schools, community centers, and a few other miscellaneous Jewish related sites. My first priority was clearing out the improper WP:ELs, but what's left behind is not all that great. "Communities" is such a broad term that without better guidelines the article could turn into "List of places where more than one Jewish person lives" and that's about as useless an article as I can imagine. Are there enough pages to turn this into a proper list of article about communities? The page Category:Jews and Judaism in the United States by city suggests to me that most relevant articles are either about history, or are about specific facilities, similar to what's already in the article. I don't think the current mix of materials is a useful list. If it includes all Jewish institutions in North America, it will have thousands of items. On the other hand, the definition of a Jewish "community" is so broad that I don't see how we could meaningfully decide on content. I would recommend splitting the list into List of synagogues in the United States, List of synagogues in Canada, List of yeshivas in the United States, List of yeshivas in Canada, List of Jewish day schools in the United States, List of Jewish day schools in Canada, etc. I didn't include Mexico or Central America because, frankly, there aren't enough of these institutions there to warrant lists (in my view). I agree, and can we please ditch the flags while we're at it? Category:Jewish schools in Canada has 15 pages total. I'm sure a few haven't been categorized, but if that's indicative of the numbers we're working with, I think List of Jewish schools in Canada might be more practical. OK, how about we move this article to List of Jewish schools in Canada and purge it of the rest of the material? Jayjg (talk) 21:01, 20 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
