Anyone know where "Rossies" for Roscommon comes from? Ulysses includes (Chp.13):

Is this a GAA article or a Ireland in general article ? Basically is this about the counties of Ireland or the GAA counties. If it about the Irish counties the links should point to the county ie County Dublin not Dublin GAA, if it's the GAA the title needs to be changed Gnevin (talk) 22:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The only entries directly about the GAA are the ones derived from the county colours, and the New York and London ones. The rest can equally be used with no reference to the GAA team. It's true they often are so used, but then, as Counties of Ireland states, the GAA is a major cause of the perpetuation of county-based identity in Ireland. jnestorius^(talk) 23:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Londonderry Note the GAA county is simple called Derry (GAA) in the body of the table or maybe
Londonderry (GAA)^*

Should london and new york have ^**

^**= Note the not a country of Ireland but included here as its a GAA county

Should Dublin have a ^***

^***=No longer a legal county

And finally should the nortern counties have ^****

^****=In Northern Ireland no longer a legal county .

I think a general note at the start of the list would be better than cluttering the table with footnotes -- it's hard to deal with citation notes and clarification notes in the same piece. There are two points:

that this relates to the "traditional" counties (hence Dub, Tipp, NI) regardless of current administrative status.
That the non-Irish GAA "county" teams have nicknames... Maybe, if there are more than the current few entries there, these could be quarantined in a separate table?

DERRY

To anyone who changes Derry to LondonDerry. Please read the first line from this page...... This is a list of nicknames for the the traditional counties of Ireland and their inhabitants. The nicknames are mainly used with reference to the county's representative team in gaelic games organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA

Derry is never called Londonderry in reference to GAA and so it should not be switched bach to londonderry, I am not getting into the debate of londonderry vs derry but i am simply stating in reference to Gaelic games Derry is NEVER refered to as Londonderry.

As you noted it is about the traditional counties. The traditional county is called County Londonderry not County Derry. This isn't an article about what the GAA calls counties, but the nicknames for the traditional counties. Canterbury Tail talk 15:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The reason "Londonderry" is used in this article is because of a longstanding Wikipedia agreement that that is used for the county while "Derry" is used for the city. I've made some changes:

removed "Blues brothers" as a nickname for Cavan. It had incorrect citations, presumably as a result of copy-paste error. Googling found me only one source Irish News. There was also an Irish Independent report on a Dublin-Cavan game where Dublin were called the Blues brothers. If this nickname is widespread, someone should be able to find a more convincing source to cite, and then re-add it. Hack journos come up with a wide range of variations on "the reds", "the blues", etc, which we ought not to list here.
removed "Flour bags" for Kildare; one reference, to the father of the owner of a self-catering cottage, is not very reliable. It's apparently obsolete, though with a better citation it would still be worth listing.
restored "Donkey Aters" for Cork, which is sourced. It's not flattering but neither are some of the others.
remove blurredkeys reference for BIFFO, which is just a blogpost linking to the original BCC reference. See also WP:SPS.
removed "blood and bandage", which (unlike yellowbellies, lilywhites, etc) refers to the strip, not the players (Another copy-paste citation error too.) Worth adding to GAA county colours though.
changed {{convert|500|acre}} to "500 acres" since it was in a direct quotation

Meta: Sorry I didn't notice it in December. So here we are in WP:BRD. By all means propose a move, and I will disagree, and we will see if anyone else comments.

Substantive: Putting "GAA" in the article title is misleading, because it suggests all the names originate with the GAA and are only ever used in allusion to the GAA teams. Some names were coined before the GAA. Some are well known to people with no knowledge of or interest in the GAA. Some are used e.g. by local TDs in the Dáil in contexts other than GAA discussions. IMO the following at least are in no way dependent on the GAA: The Banner/Faithful/Model/Orchard/Premier/Rebel/Royal/Short Grass/Yeats County; The Biffos, Fighting Cocks, Scallion Eaters, Slashers, Stone Throwers; The Breffni/Kingdom/Pale; Tipp, Tyrconnell; Garden of Ireland, Land of Heart's Desire, Mayo God help us, Tyrone among the bushes.

That is why I am going to initiate a page move request for outside input. I note that this issue came up back in 2008 as well and looking at the WikiProject Ireland discussion by Gnevin, there is not much discussion or input and well that was almost 10 years ago. I strongly disagree that it would suggest the names originate from the GAA and it can easily be worded to dispel any possible suggestions of that if it can be proved however it looks quite obvious that most of them do originate from the GAA. Obviously some may have moved from GAA to colloquial use but this list is still primarily almost entirely about GAA county nicknames. Mabuska ^(talk) 11:10, 23 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

You say "some may have moved from GAA to colloquial", but it is also true that some began outside the GAA and moved to it. Considering we have a GAA county article it would not be at all unreasonable to infer that "List of Irish GAA county nicknames" refers to GAA counties and not county counties. So the choices are

have "GAA" in the title and a caution in the lede that not all of them are GAA related,
leave "GAA" out of the title and have a note in the lede that most often they are GAA related.
title "List of nicknames for Irish counties and GAA counties" or some such

You may wish to read the article on County Londonderry in which case you'll notice that the county of Londonderry was created primarily from the former County Coleraine and there was in fact not a former County Derry other than an odd administrative unit that was not coterminous with the final county. Anyway on Wikipedia as per WP:DERRY we refer to the city as Derry and the county as Londonderry. Canterbury Tail talk 12:28, 25 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
