Hello Drmccreedy, thank you for your edit PermaLink/966771438.

I am indeed aware of this maintenance category. Can I give you some reasoning, perhaps, why I was using regular strings?

MediaWiki's name for zh-tw makes no sense. It outputs "Chinese" for zh-tw, zh-cn, etc. ISO really dropped the ball for zh. Languages as diverse as Cantonese, Beijing dialect, and Wu Chinese can be, and often are, all called "Chinese" even though they are not at all mutually intelligible in speech, especially traditional forms. (Nota bene: Varieties of Chinese.)

So, I just hacked a bit on the CS1 module, to try to make everyone happy. I don't know if it's actually allowed to use sandboxes in the article space instead of the main templates? I imagine that if it's only being done temporarily, and as a proof of concept, on one not very popular page, it should be okay.

So I made two main edits here on top of what you and Trappist the monk did:

[1]—in this edit, I redefined zh-tw to be Taiwanese Mandarin.

But you know, there's a huge political dimension to all this that there simply is not when it comes to calling en-US and en-UK both English. The Chinese Communist Party of course likes to push the idea of linguistic uniformity through Mandarin, and according to them that's what Chinese means. But since that isn't the definition our article is using, I don't know why our templates should use it.

@Drmccreedy and Trappist the monk: Also, I added a parameter called |language-extra= to my sandbox version, Module:Citation/CS1/sandboxPsi, so now the extra description of the writing system goes after the language like it should with no period. What are the chances these two changes can be upstreamed into the main module? Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 10:10, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I am going to revert your change to Module:Citation/CS1/Whitelist/sandbox. We are going to update the module suite sometime the weekend of 11–12 July so now is not the time to be introducing new parameters and functionality into a template series already overburdened with too many parameters.
The best place to discuss this possible change to the module suite is at Help talk:Citation Style 1.

@Trappist the monk: No problem. Sorry to cause you unnecessary troubles. I moved it to Module:Citation/CS1/Whitelist/sandboxPsi for now. Best, Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 10:56, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
