Revamp

I have recently revamped this list, mainly speaking is the new format. The intro needs work, (badly) and of course citations for each single one. Also I think a gallery at the bottom would be nice. Please help by adding more to the list or fixing some of my mistakes :). Arjun 02:36, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Good work! You could find some more information at Public holidays in India. As for images, Hindu festivals has several and so does some of the pages of the festivals. Cheers! S.D. ¿п? § 04:16, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Original List

Quick post of the festivals listed on the original list:

We could merge these to the current list and add compact, but informative, descriptions (along with citations, of course!). S.D. ¿п? § 04:38, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Of course, the list right now is in its basicness. We should go back and reference the ones we have *now* first (or simply add ones with refs) and then keep the list on "this talk" page intact, and whenever one of them is added we shall scratch it off. So if everyone is up for the task I think we could have a mighty fine list on our hands in the future. Arjun 04:43, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I will go to the library to pick out some cites, and add to the lead. Cheers! Arjun 05:02, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

January 14 or January 14th?

Are the little "rd"s and "th"s next to the dates really necessary? Dates are usually written the second way. –Llama man 18:06, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Good suggestion. Arjun started with the "th"s, but for now I will delete those. Cheers! S.D. ¿п? § 18:09, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Ack, thanks for reminding me. I have already deleted them :). Arjun 18:10, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
That sure was quick, Arjun. :) Cheers! Oh, and by the way, what should be done next, in your opinion? S.D. ¿п? § 18:12, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Yup. Arjuna is noted for his quickness ;). But seriously, in my opinion I think that obvioulsy we should add more of the festivals, and once we add some of the key ones, I think we should go back and cite *each* one. Once that is done...the work will be the lead. Cheers! Arjun 18:55, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Festivals according to solar calendar

I am not sure that the comment that Makar Sankranthi is the only Hindu Festival celeberated according to solar calaendar is correct. What about Vishu/Bihu?

The fact that there are also several other festivals celeberated in certain regions only is not mentioned. E.g., Tiruvatira in Kerala --K N Unni 10:47, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

2008

Can we get an update for the 2008 dates? 亮HH (talk) 01:00, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Add Thaipusam

Why isn't Thaipusam on the list? Eraserhead1 (talk) 11:11, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Organization

The list should be alphabetical or orgnaized in some other way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarun2701 (talkcontribs) 20:05, September 8, 2006

2014 dates

Many of these are in Category:Moveable holidays (2014 date missing). Would be cool if we had the dates for the upcoming year.

There are two ways to add this:

  • in article's infobox, add |date2014= followed by the date

Or even better:

Maybe a function for the Hindu calendar should be set up (sample for another series of dates: Module:Easter). -- 签名 sig at 09:41, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Request create a sample entry in article's info box for the others to follow. As the first entry, you could include the upcoming festival Makar Sankranti, celebrated when Sun enters Capricorn constellation. It is usually January 14th and may change by a day due to the transit for the year. We can then follow your edit method. Prodigyhk (talk) 02:09, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
The articles in Category:Moveable holidays (2014 date missing) now have a red link at "2014". Have a look at one. It seems to work as the number of articles in the category keeps reducing. See Template_talk:Infobox_holiday#Editintro_for_2014_dates for a description.
I have to learn more about the underlying calendar to make an entry for Template:Infobox holiday/date. Is there a function somewhere that shows how the 14 January is calculated? -- 签名 sig at 19:13, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Not sure if that holiday is a particular easy one to do. Besides, it doesn't vary that much.
An easier might be: e.g. Sitalsasthi (random sample) lists here "Sixth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Jyestha" and in the infobox "Jyeshta Shukla Shashti" (both terms seem to be equivalent).
It should be possible to build a function that converts either into Gregorian dates. In the infobox, we would just add "date=Jyeshta Shukla Shashti" or ( "hindu_day=6", "hindu_fortnight=bright", "hindu_month=Jyestha". -- 签名 sig at 19:56, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Hindu festivals follow the movement of the Sun and the Moon. If we have a function that is based on the almanac, it will work. Prodigyhk (talk) 20:07, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Possible error in the one of the festival frequencies.

The table "List and descriptions of major Hindu festivals" lists the Kumbh Mela as happening every 4 years. But the actual dedicated page mentions the Kumbh Mela happens every 3 years at one of 4 sites. As I have no clue what is the actual fact I will leave that to those in the know. Westerndates

Why cannot you put western dates?! This list is of no use if someone wants to look for a Hindu festival at e given date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.3.195.181 (talk) 19:36, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
