- British Columbia was named after the Columbia District of the Hudson's Bay Company; Columbia District is named for the Columbia River and is indirectly linked to Italian born Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus
- Manitoba was named for Lake Manitoba, from the combined Assiniboine words Mini and tobow meaning "Lake of the Prairie" or Cree word maniotwapow meaning the strait of the spirit or manitobau
- Newfoundland and Labrador was named for the English term New Found Land and after explorer João Fernandes Lavrador; Lavrador is Portuguese for the Landholder
- New Brunswick was named in honour of the British monarch, King George III of the House of Brunswick (Haus Braunschweig); indirectly Brunswick is linked to the German city of Braunschweig

Canadian provincial name etymologies → Canadian provincial and territorial name etymologies – I suggest we rename it to include reference to the non-province territories that are included in the article. Mnmazur (talk) 13:24, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
