Talk:List of British Jewish writers

Linkrot tag

edit

I added this as, should those "official websites" be being used to verify the religion of this list, they should be references, not external links. If not, they should be removed. Nikthestoned 13:06, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in List of British Jewish writers

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of British Jewish writers's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Times":

  • From Helen Szamuely: "Helen Szamuely", The Times, 20 April 2017
  • From Tony Greenstein: Spiro, Zachary (2 April 2016). "Labour welcomes back blogger who compares Israelis to Nazis". The Times. Archived from the original on 24 May 2020. Retrieved 10 March 2021.
  • From Charlotte Dacre: "Obituary". The Times. 9 November 1825. Mrs. Byrne, wife of Nicholas Byrne of the Morning Post [died] on Monday evening in Lancaster Place, after a long and painful illness
  • From History of the Jews in Angola: Sage, Adam (Oct 28, 2009). "French establishment players convicted over arms to Angola scandal". The Times.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 01:55, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

There's something wrong with how this article has been working

edit

Looking at the history of this article, it seems all the editing here is IPs copy-pasting without attribution from articles about the individual writers, often with broken references, then User:Mikeblas fixes the references manually, which I think he'd rather not have to be doing constantly. I see User:DMacks just semi-protected this for a year to stop the problematic IP edits, but it might be worth figuring out how to stop it from starting back up again when the protection expires.

Why this only happens here, and not on say List of Jewish American authors, I don't know. And most of the other subcats of Category:Jewish writers by nationality don't seem to even have corresponding list articles. Anomie 21:13, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The copying pattern happens lots of places, not just here. (Recently, List of largest land carnivorans, List of Colombians, ... Also common in date-summary articles, like List of spaceflight launches in July–December 2024 or 2020s in United Kingdom political history, and ...) This is a sub-page of List of British Jews, which has sub-pages for many/most of its categories. I think List of Jewish American authors is organized in a different way.
There were a lot of problems here fixed at once because I happened to notice them, and because the pattern went unchecked for a while. Happy (mostly) to fix referencing problems; if I wasn't, what else would I do all day? -- mikeblas (talk) 01:27, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is supposed to be a list

edit

This page is supposed to be a list, but is turning into a collection of ever longer synopses, making it overlong and unwieldy, especially if viewed on a phone. Please compare it to List of Jewish American authors referred to above, where, on my screen setting, only one entry exceeds one line, and that only by one word. These people all have articles for the details, a simple born/died and 10-15 word description is all that is required, whereas some of the current entries are over 270 words long, longer than many articles. It appears that some editors may think that length gives additional importance.
Please could we consider/agree a notional word-limit and reduce the bloated entries? Thanks - Arjayay (talk) 21:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
