I'm wondering if the page is realy needed seeing that we've already got Category:BASIC dialects. Ae-a 23:42, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

The main reason I established this page was to ensure that we'd have a "flat" alphabetical (i.e. quickly'n'easily navigable) and annotated list of BASIC dialects, in order for the reader to get an informative but still concise overview of all BASICs (known to WKP). I think that there is a real need for such a page, because
  1. the category page displays the dialects by name only, and thus imparts no information whatsoever neither on history/origin, acronym expansion, nor platform(s) (all of which, when written concisely, easily fits on a single line of text); and
  2. the List of BASIC dialects by platform (LoBDbP) is, to be blunt, (bound to be) somewhat messy in its layout, and not particularly well-suited to the task of giving readers a comprehensive and straightforwardly browsable overview of the range of BASIC dialects past and present.
To provide a clear idea of what I mean, I just copied the old flat alphalist from the main BASIC article over to this one (I guess I should have done so already, but now it's done at long last). Of course, I'll have to check for additions & changes in the LoBDbP, but that's no problemo, as I monitor both lists + the main BASIC article. --Wernher 22:31, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

This edit made the article internally inconsistent, using the terms "Linux" and "GNU/Linux" interchangeably. This is confusing; we should use one or the other. It also reversed some noncontroversial copyedits. It should be reverted. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 19:04, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

switch to comprehesion of BASIC dialects

This is a list, but i think it will be a wise move to rename this article and build a comprehesion of BASIC dialects.

Since there's currently nothing to compare them to and BASIC has multiple versions that have been made from it.

Workstation Basic

My first time posting. I apologize if this is the wrong place.

About 20 years ago, I had to convert data from files created by something called Workstation Basic. It was my understanding that this version was "network aware", in that multiple workstations could open the same files simultaneously. I can't verify if this is true, as I only programmed in it long enough to get the data out. My first thought was that it was created by Digital Research, but the more I think about it, the more I think that's not right.

Has anyone else heard of this, or is my memory worse than I thought? I did not feel comfortable adding it to the list without verification.

Cleanup needed

Hello all,

Currently this article is a mess as there's many of "dialects" of questionable notability. I would like to make a massive cleanup by removing non notable entries.

A large amount of dialects lack references or links to other articles which makes it difficult to know if the dialect even existed or is notable. I believe that once references and links are added, it will make it easy to note which dialects may be considered non-notable. Probably after this is done a community consensus will exist and determine which dialects are notable. Main thing is to add references and let a community consensus make decisions on notability. I would think that nearly all of them could be referenced to some computer magazine, so deserve a mention in this list. I think it is reasonable to include, in a "list", all of those that have existed, and not just those that are sufficiently notable to deserve an article of their own. I for one find the article useful *because* of the lesser known dialects, however the one dialect in which I was interested was listed without any description: SAX BASIC.
