some of the TV station call letters are interesting in themselves - ATV-10 in Melbourne stands for Associated Television, TCN-9 in Sydney stands for Television Centre (the N stands for NSW but could also be construed as meaning Nine) and HSV-7 in Melbourne stands for Herald Sun Victoria (in 1956 when TV started The Herald and the Sun News-Pictorial were separate papers owned by The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd who also owned HSV.)
Is there enough info (channels) to actually NEED this listing? AFAIK there are only the three commercial networks plus SBS and the ABC. I guess we could stretch it with the couple of 'community' stations and the country amalgamations and the pay television networks, but it's still a very finite list. KJ
As this is a talk page, I'll reply down here rather than edit above..
- ATV I always thought was Ansett Television
- HSV was Herald Sun Victoria (as above)
- GTV was General Television
- TCN was Television Consolidated (or Consolidation)
- ATN was Amalgamated Television
- TEN was T-E-N as in the number 10. [Note this was edited to say "The Entertainment Network", this slogan was not used until the early 1990s when the current blue circle logo started being used, I have edited it back].
- QTQ, BTQ, TVQ: at a guess - Queensland Television, Brisbane Television, TeleVision Queensland
- ADS, SAS:at a guess - ADelaide, South Australia
- NWS - No idea!
- TVW - TeleVision (WA)
- STW - Swan Television
- NEW - N-E-W (only started around 1980's)
- TVT - TeleVision Tasmania
- TNT - Television Northern Tasmania
- TDT - Tasmanian Digital Television
And there are a LOT of regional stations... true 95% of them are owned by WIN, Southern Cross or Prime.. but the original callsigns still exist.. I have a list of the callsigns and have been meaning to add them to this page.. but the table looks too crowded already... see http://austvhistory.tripod.com
Note: as I edit this, i thought KJ's comment above referred to the list of callsigns... but it seems to refer to the page itself. I can't check at the moment to see when you added that comment, but if you look at the table in the article you'll see there is plenty of information about Aus TV channels to fill out the page quite well!--Chuq 09:13, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Apologies for i did amend some text at the top of the page. But please note TCN does stand for Television Corporation NSW as Television Corporation was the first licencee and N stands for NSW. ATV does stand for Austarama Television Victoria. It does not stand for Associated Television, i believe that is the definition for ATV in the United Kingdom, not Australia --Andjb 08:45, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- This is a good page, however it is not a good list of Australian Television Channels. It is a messy, complex and in depth article about all the television broadcasting ins and outs all over Australia.
- The List of British television channels is a good model, even if Australian networks aren't allowed the same multi-channeling freedoms as British networks.
- I'll compose a list for Sydney, and I'll let natives of other capital cities to do the same for their respective towns.
- The existing article is detailed enough for rural television matters. Jarrod 04:01, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

It's a bit messy, and doubles up a bit on some parts of the actual article, but is designed to be placed at the bottom of TV station pages, which there aren't many of yet. Please offer suggestions/ideas! --Chuq 00:55, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Great to have that table there :) although it should be pointed out that a lot of those callsigns/frequencies, specifically the regional ones, don't exist anymore since aggregation (eg. BTV and GMV are now VTV. RVN and CWN are now merged into CBN, etc) and other stations have converted to alternative frequencies (eg. AMV-4 is now AMV-11, WIN-4 is now WIN-59). - Good point. I've made things more accurate, although also more ugly :P I think all those brackets, hyphens and question marks are messing things up, that should improve as pages get created. Where just the number is different, I guess we could do redirects rather than list the different frequencies they have used. Technically the numbers aren't too relevant, as pretty much all stations have repeaters as well which are on different channels anyway... not to mention digital broadcasts! Still, TCN-9 wouldn't be the same if it was just TCN, (and so on) so I couldn't really leave the numbers out! --Chuq 02:00, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Eight Network

Because there was never a "proper capitial city" station on that frequency, let alone one in most capital cities as with 7, 9 & 10. This is because there has to be a frequency gap between channels used in the same area, and 8 is adjacent to both 7 and 9. 10 got to be used because there's a gap between 9 and 10, now assigned to channel 9A.
There was a TV8 network in regional Victoria during the 80's, which was so named because most of the main transmitters used channel 8. Similarly, Darwin's sole commercial station was called "Channel Eight" for most of it's life (it's now Nine Darwin). SES-8 was another locally dominant 8 station, in South East SA and South West Victoria (it's now WIN SA).
Today, the mental gap between Networks 7 and 9 is being filled by Fox8, available only via pay TV. matturn 03:41, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
Remodeling
OK now I've added the specific channel listing for Sydney. I invite all those in other capital cities (and who have access to digital tv) to compile a similar list. Now the article is a tad messy and incomplete. I still feel that a lot of the information in the article is relevant, but clear, concise and descriptive channel listings for each state's capital city are needed. Any overlaps of information will have to be weeded out, obviously, but I have to get on with the day. Love Jarrod 06:30, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
- I like what you've done there Jarrod - I hope that there are enough people around with knowledge of what is locally available in all areas to make the list complete. Don't forget, what you have done for the Sydney area, will also have to be done with about 12-14 other licensing regions around the country.
- Although it isn't a list, the existing article is quite a useful article. I have an existing redirect, Television in Australia, that points to this article. It might be worth moving the "old" article to that name, and keep List of Australian television channels in your "new" format.
- The other issue is that these are mainly digital channels - would Digital television in Australia or List of Australian digital television channels be more appropriate? -- Chuq 07:19, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
- In the style of [[List of British television channels], I think digital channels should be included, even though DTV has a much greater market share over there.
- I hope a contribution from a person in each of the capital cities isn't too much to hope for. Perhaps rural and remote areas (dare I say including Darwin?) can be detailed in a fashion similar to the way the article's bulk is set out.
- I thought rural and remote areas could be set out the exact same way as capital city areas. Hence 12-14 licensing areas and my concern that the article may be too long? -- Chuq 11:35, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
- Analogue broadcasting particulars are already there, perhaps more information on digital broadcasting arrangements in these areas can be added in a similar fashion.
- Most of this article could probably be moved to Television in Australia, except perhaps a brief list (and the table) of the different companies offering channels in rural and remote areas.

- There doesn't seem to be much interest in contributing details of this format. I've taken out the Sydney details for now, as the half-and-half layout (part new, part old) looks a bit strange. Tasmania
I have looked at Television in Tasmania and under Ten it has the Ten Network, which is broadcast in Tasmania but it is known as TDT to some. Although, Southern Cross Television also has affiliation with the Ten Network and anyway Southern Cross Broadcasting and WIN Television own Tasmanian Digital Television, whose logo should be there?
