James L. Lipscomb, is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of MetLife Inc. In this position he has responsibility for overseeing all of the legal services provided in support of MetLife’s business activities, both at the corporate center and in MetLife’s business units worldwide. In a career spanning 30 years with MetLife, Mr. Lipscomb has held several business and legal positions, most recently, as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (2001-2003). As President and CEO of Conning Corporation (2000-2001), a former MetLife subsidiary, he managed businesses ranging from private equity and asset management to life insurance industry research. He served as Head of Corporate Planning and Strategy (1998-2000), and headed up MetLife’s mortgage portfolio in the Real Estate Investments Department (1992 –1998). Mr. Lipscomb has held leadership positions in various local, state and national legal organizations, including The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, where he serves as Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of the Association ; the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, where he served as a member of the Board of Governors and the editor of the ACREL Papers; the American Bar Association, where he was a member of the Real Property and Probate and Corporation Law Sections; and the State Bar of California, where he served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Real Property Law Section. He is a member of the state bars in New York and California. Mr. Lipscomb’s civic affiliations include serving as a Vice-Chair of the Citizens Budget Commission of New York and as a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Citizens Crime Commission. He also is a Director of the MetLife Foundation, several subsidiaries of MetLife, and the Life Insurance Council of New York.
