Hello SuperSkaterDude45. The WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE points out that it should have concise information, a summary with the key information. In "commanders and leaders" the key is the commanders-in-chief of each side. On the Chilean side, without a doubt, it would be General Baquedano. On the Peruvian side would be Piérola and his Chief of Staff Pedro Silva Gil, who assisted him in directing the campaign, since Pierola was not a professional military. The others are military officers of lower rank who do not make decisions about how to proceed with the campaign. Therefore, they do not have the relevance of being in the infobox. Keep in mind that the infobox should be a summary with the most important ones, to make it easier for readers. It is not about putting in the infobox all the military officers who have participated in the campaign or who are named in the article.
As for the foreigners Sterling, Sabrano and Petit-Thouars, they cannot appear in the infobox, because they are not part of the Chilean or Peruvian side, they are not belligerent, they did not participate in any military action. They are military observers who are generally always present in wars, neutrals who are limited to taking care of their citizens in countries at war. Muwatallis II (talk) 07:08, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Muwatallis II: The thing is though that the commanders mentioned play more of a prominent role within the article. For example, Piérola is only mentioned 5 times in the article while Miguel Iglesias is mentioned 9 times or Patricio Lynch being mentioned around 13 times compared to Manuel Baquedano with 9. If we're applying importance then I don't necessarily see your point considering that some of the leaders you want to remove from the infobox arguably play more of a role then the ones you want to keep in the infobox. Other examples of commanders within the infobox that aren't the highest grade of staff, look at the Russo-Japanese War or Second French intervention in Mexico articles. Even then, you can simplify the article without removing the generals by simply using the Collapsible list template and hiding the other subordinate commanders.
As for the foreign interventionists, they were technically on the Peruvian side as they were also there to prevent the Chileans from burning and looting Lima though that was generally their major role and Abel-Nicolas Bergasse du Petit-Thouars was known for his role during this operation so excluding him is criminal considering he is considered to be a war hero in Peru during the war. Even then, you can simply use the third side parameters within the infobox template to further express that they weren't on either side or make it similar to the Boxer Rebellion or Russian Civil War where the factions are divided based on the neutrality or the position of the belligerents.
