How is lido pronounced? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.148.14 (talk) 16:01, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

It may be pronounced lie-doe or lee-doe, either is acceptable in the U.K. Of course the latter is how the Italians pronounce it! Lidos (talk) 14:33, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Added new section Pronunciation, as it's always being asked.
Anyone familiar with phonetic WP markup is welcome to add these too.
I assume one can't cut and paste the HTML which is ldō and ldō
(View source of this page or click Edit as Firefox 3.0 doesn't display it, for me.)

Move edit

I'm moving the page from Lido (swimming pool) to Lido as this is the most common usage for Lido as can be shown by a simple WP:GOOGLETEST where all initial matches are for Lido in the swimming pool sense or places named because of the swimming pool rather than the Lido in Venice. A redirect will avoid any confusion.--Lidos (talk) 12:41, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

As outlined on your talk page, popularity is not the only criteria - but I think I cleaned up most of the consequences of this move. Please do use requested moves in future. Kbthompson (talk) 14:47, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

External links edit

I propose to remove the External Links to specific pools as they are adequately referenced on their own WP article.--Lidos (talk) 07:19, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Creation and History edit

Clicking History on Lidos only goes back to 25 Aug 2009. For earlier History of this Article please use this link.--Lidos (talk) 08:25, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Saltdean Lido - NOT the first Grade II* listed lido in the UK edit

A number of websites, including the BBC News pages given as sources here quote the mistaken assertion that Saltdean Lido in Brighton was the first UK lido to receive Grade II* listed status. Clifton Lido in Bristol was Grade II* listed in 1998:

http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1323692 I've reverted to the previous edit. 90.204.150.195 (talk) 01:15, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I stand corrected. First time in my experience that a BBC citation has proven wrong! kencf0618 (talk) 02:32, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
How often do you check? :o)
The BBC website is generally pretty good, but journalists working to deadlines will sometimes quote a press release without properly checking the source. The origin of this error seems to lie with the Saltdean Lido Campaign:

I've sent them a note.

UK-specific term? edit

I've never seen this term applied to outdoor swimming pools in the USA. Kortoso (talk) 19:45, 20 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

land-based ones, no, but i think a fair number of americans are familiar with "lido deck" on cruise ships now.
any hotels using it similarly? 73.238.106.68 (talk) 10:21, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

LidoLido (swimming pool) – Moved (although without any apparent objection) back in 2009. It's not clear that this article satisfies the criteria of a primary topic; see Lido (disambiguation) In particular, Lido (musician) gets more pageviews, and Lido Finance could very well soon have an article [1]. See WP:NOPRIMARY. 162 etc. (talk) 17:18, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Support per nomination. There are 26 bulleted entries listed upon the Lido (disambiguation) page, with no indication that the four-sentence Lido stub delineates a subject of such renown that it dwarfs the combined notability of all the remaining entries. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 20:33, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Speedy support per nom, pretty clear cut.--Ortizesp (talk) 21:47, 19 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak support the musician has more views (3,721) than the pool (3,167)[[2]] but the pool probbaly has more long-term significance but a DAB is probably fine given there are several other uses like places. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:01, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
