First World War service

I checked the WWI campaign medals for Dawe on the off-chance, not really expecting to find anything since school teaching was a reserved occupation. However, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=2285387 shows that a Leonard Sydney Dawe did serve, first as a lieutenant in the 1/4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment (which would make a certain amount of sense given his Southampton connections), and then as a captain with the St Paul's School Officer Training Corps, which again as a teacher makes a certain amount of sense. These details can be freely seen fromt ehl ink above, looking at the card itself, which will normally require a fee, I can see that this man served in the Mesopotamia Campaign from September 1917.

On a different note, I dimly recall the stuff about the keywords turning up in a TV drama doc/reconstruction, maybe broadcast to coincide with the 50th anniversary of D-Day. David Underdown (talk) 11:58, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

The London Gazette shows Leonard Sydney Dawe being commissioned as a second lieutenant for service with the Forest School OTC on 20 February 1915, "No. 29077". The London Gazette. 19 February 1915., transferred to Hampshire Regiment "local reserve", on 9 May 1916, "No. 29583". The London Gazette. 16 May 1916., transferred as a lieutenant from a service battalion of the Hampshires (which would match with service in 1/4th) to St Paul's OTC on 29 April 1920, "No. 31881". The London Gazette (). 27 April 1920., promoted major with St Paul's OTC on 25 August 1926, "No. 33205". The London Gazette. 24 September 1926., but resigns that commission on 16 Ocotber 1926, "No. 33211". The London Gazette. 15 October 1926. David Underdown (talk) 12:33, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for that - when I get time, I'll incorporate all that in the article. It seems that the statement that he joined the Strand School in 1913 was wrong, if he was with the Forest School in 1915 and St. Paul's in 1920. Interestingly, the Val Gilbert book says that little is known about his WWI career - she needed you on the case! Excellent work. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 13:07, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Well he could have had a few terms at Strand starting in 1913, before moving to Forest. Presumably after leaving St Paul's was when he became head of Strand. I did also turn up a couple more Gazette entries which suggest he had a brief connection with the City of London Army Cadet Force in teh late 40s, but since they didn't mention his former rank, that might have been someone else. Given the publication date of the book, there's no excuse for her overlooking these records really-though as it stands it's not an absolutely positive id - given his continued service into teh 20s it may be that his fulls ervice record is still held by the MOD, and it's that we really need to see to confirm that I've got the right person beyond all doubt.
