German lyrics (from Tchaikovsky's manuscript) edit

The Tchaikovsky manuscript linked in the article has handwritten German lyrics. This is my best attempt at deciphering them (I don't speak German):

Als noch ein kind war Jesus Christ
Im Gärtlein er zu jener Frist
Wohl eines Rosenstrauches pflag
Dass er ihm einst ein Kräuzlein frag

Als nun die Rosen flühten auf
Kam Juda's Kinder schaar zu Hauf
Sich übers Stäuchlein lärmend fer
und raubte alle Zweige leer

"Was schlingst du nun als Krans in's Haar"
zief höhnend daun die Schlimme Schaar
"Liesst ihr mir duch noch nach den Dorn"
das Kind darauf sprach ohne Zorn

und mit den Dornen, nach, erhaubt
umkräuzten sie ihm nun das Haupt
da färbte statt der Rosen Gluth
die reine Stirn ihm dunkles Blut

Looks as if it could be this translation by Hans Schmidt.

Interestingly, this translation uses the AABB rhyming scheme also used by Dearmer.
