Talk:Leg warmer

"Leg warmers are worn as fashion pieces and do not serve any other useful function." - Where is the evidence for this?

The following paragraphs were suggested to explain the purpose of leg warmers:

"Leg warmers were originally dancewear worn by Ballet and other classic dancers. Used during the first parts of class or rehearsal, leg warmers help the muscles and tendons in calf and ankle warm up until they are sufficiently loosened from stretching, particularly in cold environments. Using leg warmers is believed to prevent muscle and ligament strains due to over-exercising cold legs. They are also used to keep dancers' leg muscles warm between periods of activity."

"Leg warmers can vary in length, though not in width, due to the material's stretchiness. They are commonly worn to just below the knee, though many dancers prefer it to extend to cover the lower parts of the thigh. Some leg warmers cover the entire foot; these warmers usually have a pad that grips the floor so the dancer does not slip. Some leg warmers are particularly short and made of thinner material; these are also known as 'ankle warmers'."

Why have these been removed?

use in cycling edit

Leg warmers and arm warmers are made specifically for use in cycling, and have been for well over half a century. Cycling leg warmers are long enough to cover much of the thigh and overlap cycling shorts; while arm warmers will overlap the sleeves of a short sleeve jersey. This allow one to convert shorts and jersey to full length garments for warmth, either for warmup purposes or for comfort in cold weather; but still allow for easy removal when not needed. leg warmers edit

Leg warmers are worn to keep the lower legs warm in colder weather. They can be tubular sleeves, long fabric wrappings, or simple pieces of fur or fabric tied around the calves. They are used in several sports including cycling, soccer, hockey, ice skating, and dance.

They have several advantages the main one being that they keep you warmer (a pair of summer shoes can become as warm as knee high boots), second they allow you to regulate your sweating and body temperature easier than long underwear pulling them up or pushing them down, third they don't need to be changed and washed as often as socks when backpacking so you can carry more smaller socks.

Leg warmers make part of the traditional clothing of different cultures. They are called Hmoob Dlub leg wraps of the hmong tribes , loferl stuzen in southern Germany, alpaca Calentadores, and singket by the Singpho in Northern India, CharlesMJames (talk) 23:47, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
