I'm not convinced this is an Australia specific rule, as opposed to one that applies the world over in non-urban areas. The english Country Code has this as a rule, and an internet search shows the phrase being used in many U.S. publications. Steve 00:12, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay! We should rewrite the article then. (I have a vague recollection from decades ago that rural Australians believed that English people had a tendency to close gates, but obviously that's wrong.) Do you have some URLs from your research? Cheers, CWC(talk) 02:52, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Yesterday your article inspired me to rewrite The Country Code entry on the english rules, and, yes, your memory serves you well in that code originally said 'Fasten gates'! It was revised to the Countryside Code in 2004 and that rule changed to 'leave gates as you find them.' A Google of the phrase 'the gate as you found it' shows up on quite a few US and UK sites. Not really sure how to proceed though. Make your article more generic as the only worldwide applicable rule of the bush? Steve 03:05, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
