Title

Hi! The title of this article is now The Departure. It was changed from Le Départ by Lugnuts. I'm extremely surprised of this. I wrote 99% of the long french article and read almost all that was written about this movie, I never saw The Departure as english title. For exemple, in Sight and Sound, in a short review in Spring 1968 (p.108) and in an interview of Skolimowski in Summer 1968 (p.142) it's called by the french title Le Départ. I'd like to know where does the name The Departure comes from (does it mean there is a reference about the movie I don't have?) The Departure (1967 film) → Le Départ – multiple:

1. WP:NATURAL favours a title which avoids parenthetic disambiguator. A user is more likely to know the film's French title than its year of production.
2. WP:NCF#Foreign-language films says use the commonest title of release in English-language markets. I believe this commonest was the French title in 1967-9 first run and for most video releases, but am open to correction. The New York Times matches depart and not departure. It is on Netflix in Ireland as le départ.
3. It's hard to verify, but it seems the untranslated name is somewhat more common in English sources, so WP:UE is overridden by WP:COMMONNAME
4. As the article states, The Departure is an inaccurate translation in the context. The NYT report from Berlin 1967 translates it "The Start".

Other relevant info: Moved in 2010 from Le départ by Lugnuts in 2010 with summary "WP:UE and WP:NCF". Soboky objected in 2016. The name on screen is all lowercase le départ and the French convention for titles would be titlecase Le départ, but English sources prefer Le Départ. jnestorius^(talk) 21:15, 14 December 2022 (UTC)

  I don't know if there's a DVD version with English cover or even subtitles. There was a English-subtitled VHS version ([1] [2]). WorldCat's library search for videos with author "Skolimowski, Jerzy" lists 4 items with title Le départ, one of which has 15 subitems, of which one is Le Départ = The Start. There are also three Der Start but no The Departure. Amazon has an Italian DVD titled Il Vergine. The track listing for soundtrack colllection Jazz in Polish Cinema: Out of the Underground 1958-1967 lists the relevant films; some like Knife in the Water are given in English but Le départ is in French. jnestorius^(talk) 02:06, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

  That Google search is a bit simplistic.

  • "Le Départ" "Jerzy Skolimowski" -wikipedia English-language has ~120 matches, in which I see some that are English translations on primarily non-English websites; some with minimal info, perhaps scraped from Wikipedia; some false positives; some with "Le Départ (The Departure)" or the like. One that is significant is the BBFC rating page "The Departure" (release date 15/10/2022 so maybe for Netflix?).
  • OTOH "Le Départ" "Jerzy Skolimowski" -wikipedia English-language has ~120 matches, with a smaller proportion having the above defects
  • FWIW "The Start" "Jerzy Skolimowski" -wikipedia English-language has slightly more hits but most are false positives
