A judicial controversy surrounded her husband, Moroccan-born Abbès Guenned, in 1997-1998 but he was never indicted in Belgium, only the Moroccan judicial authorities asked for his extradition through Interpol. In 2004, Laurette Onkelinx took him as ministerial counselor on multicultural affairs and he was in charge of the supervision of the elections for the Muslim Council representatives. In between, they had divorced and she had married in 1998 the constitutional expert and lawyer Marc Uyttendaele.

Victor Hoxha was told NEVER to return?

"In september 2006, it was reported that the criminal Victor Hoxha had returned to Belgium - he was deported earlier from Belgium in 2006, and "told never to return."" Do we have any source on that "never"? This article [1](in Dutch) says "In zijn beschikking stond uitdrukkelijk vermeld dat hij de eerste tien jaar ons land niet meer in mocht. Zoniet zou hij hier zijn straf voort moeten uitzitten." So that means that for (at least) ten years, he couldn't return to Belgium. I'm changing it for now... Evilbu 22:37, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

NPOV

This article mostly lists scandals where LO or relatives are involved. Surely there are some more positive reasons why this woman got the position she has... --FvdP 21:14, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

You are actually right. There was something potentially libellous in the Guenned episode, which I corrected. The problem with this story is that the internet fury about it (with Vlaams Belnag, Nation and Islamist extremists, bien étonnés de se retrouver ensemble, quoted each other to push the google ranking of the story) makes it worthy of mention, but to put it into the proper perspective, you need so much additional info ... --Pan Gerwazy 15:47, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Controversy

When Turkish terrorist Fehriye Erdal was sentenced to 4 year imprisonment by a Brugge court on February 28, 2006, it turned out that she had shaken off the Belgian secret service, which had the responsibility of following her since February 23, 2006 (Erdal had been on house arrest since 2000, and living in the same building as the DHKP-C secretariat). Both Laurette Onkelinx and Minister of the Interior Patrick Dewael have come under fire for this incident; the CD&V and Vlaams Belang demanded the resignation of both of them on March 6, 2006.

In July 2006, Onkelinx came under heavy political fire again when one of Belgian's most notorious criminals, Murat Kaplan, did not return from a weekend-leave, which she signed off. In August 2006 she came again under heavy fire when 28 prisoners managed to escape from a prison in Dendermonde. In September 2006, it was reported that the criminal Victor Hoxha had returned to Belgium - he was deported earlier from Belgium in 2006, and told not to return for ten years. Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, of the VLD, has now asked the minister to refrain from releasing any criminals prematurely in the coming three months, but she refuses this demand. This comes just before the government prepares its budget for the coming year, and the October municipal elections. CD&V and Vlaams Belang again have asked the resignation of the minister, but it is unknown how far the VLD will go in supporting the minister (and accordingly, the current federal government). On September 23, it was reported that another criminal did not return from day-leave. Tony Van Parys, of the CD&V party, called it "incomprehensible that someone like Azzouzi [criminal in question] would get penitentiary leave." The cabinet's crisis was averted the next week, when a deal was struck between the VLD and PS, allowing criminals only to be released on parole, in the next months, after consent by their victim (or the victim's family).

On October 6, two days before the Belgian municipal elections, Laurette Onkelinx was hit with a pie at an election event in Schaarbeek. The perpetrator was Benito Franscesconi, a 78-year old man, who has a history of "civil disobiedence." Franscesconi has made himself a civil party to many court cases in which he had no direct interest.

First married to Abbès Guenned, a Belgian of Moroccan descent, she divorced him in 1997-1998, Morroco asked for his extradition, accusing him of drug trafficking (Guenned was stopped on July 31 1997 at the airport of Zaventem, while being in the possession of a diplomatic passport), a charge which has since been dropped. At that time, Onkelinx was presiding over the government of Belgium's French Community. Onkelinx remarried barrister Marc Uyttendaele. Witnesses to this marriage were both their former husband and wife. In 2003, Guenned became an adviser to Onkelinx' cabinet, charged with the preparation of the election of the Belgian advisory Muslim council, and dealing with town management but, especially, with the communication between the cabinet and the Islamic associations.

Strange NPOV issue

I just reverted this strange edition where somebody, at the same time, adds a large text (about as much as the previous text of the article) and at the same time puts an NPOV tag. So I delete the whole stuff, as I just do not get what the idea is: if the text has an NPOV issue, why add it to the article? Anyway, the text and the tag were placed 14 hours ago without any input herein. Besides, from the discussions I can see in this page, it may not be the first time te text is put in the article. Finally, I feel pretty comfortable when I revert a text that says that "She is considered to be the most powerful woman in Belgian politics", as this is not only unsourced but may be disputable (see Joëlle Milquet). The whole "controversy" part is unsourced, completely. There are supposed to be 3 sources, 2 of them are in turkish, the other is a dead link. I propose to delete the whole thing under WP:BLP, as some of these information are rather touchy. Sipahoc (talk) 15:09, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Maurice Onkelinx (grandfather)

Is it relevant that the subject of this article is the granddaughter of a man who collaborated with the Nazis before she was born? Or is this a politically motivated slur? If someone can justify the mentioning of this fact, that would be fine, but otherwise I think it should be removed from the article. LynwoodF (talk) 21:03, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Well, I don't seem to have had any reaction to the above, so I shall undo the edit. I am not a great fan on Laurette Onkelinx, but she has no choice as to who her grandparents were and, to my mind, it is not appropriate to highlight this particular fact at this point.
