Direction

What should be the direction of this article? Should it be similar to the article on Jews in Latin America? That article gets redirected to History of the Jews in Latin America.--LatinoMuslim 14:17, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

It seems to me that a better alternative to this would be to call this article Islam in Latin America and make it more in line with Islam in the United States as Muslim is not regarded as an ethnic term in the same way that Jew can be. rb000 (talk) 16:11, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Questions

Should I create a template called Latin American Muslims which consists of the articles such as Islam in Argentina, etc? Should this particular article be renamed to Islam in Latin America or History of Muslims in Latin America?

To be honest with you, there was a very good article on Islam in Latin America that was voted for deletion on Wikipedia. Therefore, I am reluctant to spend my time creating an article that will not be half as good as the one that was voted for deletion. --LatinoMuslim 14:22, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

This article is barely more than a stub despite the growth of Latin American Muslims and their rapidly increasing social and political relevance. Anyone out there? Muslim Population of Brazil

I am confused by the disparity between the number given on this page and the 2000 census of Brazil. On the census (information found on the page "Islam in Brazil" on Wikipedia) it says that 28,000 Muslims lived in Brazil. It says that some people quote within the religious community have stated it is closer to 1,500,000. That is quite a difference. While I believe that, as is the case in any immigrant community, their may be a rejection of the former culture's religion, I don't know if that justifies the difference. There are many people of Middle Eastern descent in Brazil - mostly Lebanese and mostly Christian since the civil war. So, either we have a conspiracy to suppress the amount of Muslims in Brazil or a conspiracy by the Imams of Brazil to inflate their population for whatever reason...or Muslims do not self identify on the census. 98.64.228.117 (talk) 02:51, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Tom in Florida

Suriname isn't part of Latin America

As per title - Suriname's official language is Dutch, and Guyana's is English - ergo, not latin (or Romance) languages. They're in South America, yes, but not Latin.

I appreciate that, while mine appears to be the majority opinion (as per ), not absolutely everyone agrees.

Also, Islam's history in Suriname is extremely significant so don't want to delete without a discussion. Perhaps an option rather than deleting would be to add a note to the paragraph mentioned suriname along the lines of 'While not part of Latin America, Suriname's Muslim history is significant'.
