- I'm not used to seeing "south west", normally encountering southwest or south-west. Is this a BritEng thing?
- Yes. (Possibly a Commonwealth thing. I only seem to get queries from US editors.)

- Ha. An article with exactly the same sentence in recently went through ACR without anyone picking up that, one might have thought obvious, point. Done.
- English controlled Hyphenate. And here as well French held and French leaning territory

- army 12,000 and 15,000 strong Shouldn't this have an endash instead?
- It lost a "between" somewhere. Now reinserted.
