Wards

Incorporated in 1995, the previously unincorporated communities of Winfield, Okanagan Centre, Oyama, and Carr's Landing remain as separate wards within Lake Country. In the municipal government, one councillor is drawn from each of these wards, while the mayor, and two further councillors are elected by the people at large.

Just curious - does this mean that Lake Country is the only BC municipality with wards. Or are there others?Skookum1 22:04, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't think Lake Country is the only municipality in BC to have wards. I believe that the particular system in Lake Country, where some councillors are elected in wards, and others are elected at large, is unique in the province.Vortigern 6:22, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Indeed, but again, I don't think there are any other cities or munis in BC that have wards.....maybe Victoria, but I don't think so. The term is somewhat alien in BC, which is why I was wondering; always controversial when raised in Vancouver, often passed by referendum, always ignored by council there; there's no link to the municipality's own site (the council one is dead) so I can't check what their own usage is; I'm wondering if it's an imposition of an "outside" term like "seat" was in application/reference to regional districts here (in Wikipedia) for so long.Skookum1 (talk) 17:58, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
The letters patent for the District of Lake Country describe them as "neighbourhood constituencies", however, the term "ward" also appears on the council website, and from what I can see, in both formal and informal contexts. While "ward" does not reflect the legal usage, it does reflect common use by the District itself, so it seems less like an outside imposition than a sort of shorthand description. On the question of whether any other BC municipality uses this system, the District says that the system is unique: Link. Vortigern (talk) 11:22, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Oyama and Winfield

Are these locations part of Lake Country? 66.183.217.31 21:55, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
