Not copyright violation edit

Having edited this page before on a very limited basis (but hardly a principal editor), the entire article is certainly not a blatant copyright violation. While it certainly draws from the two sources mentioned, it also cites them in the article. If something is just plagiarized from the Kent State or Cornell sources, it should be removed or rewritten. --JonRidinger (talk) 00:16, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

This is part of a larger problem, and I tagged the article to give it a chance to be rewritten. The problems account for a large portion of the article, and when I tried removing them it left significant holes that seemed to make the article untenable without a complete rewrite. The specific concerns are:
In Background:
A native of Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, Kennedy earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cornell University in 1963. Kennedy was an All-America goalkeeper and team captain for Cornell’s ice hockey team. He earned All-Ivy League honors for three consecutive years and was named the Cornell’s Outstanding Athlete in 1963.

In Cornell University:
He also supervised an upgrading of the physical plant -- a new press box on Schoellkopf Field, refurbishing of Schoellkopf Stadium, a new football surface (All-Pro Turf) installed, construction of the multipurpose Alberding Field House (now Bartels Hall), and the Oxley Equestrian Center.

Under his leadership, the department saw the upgrading of the physical plant -- a new press box on Schoellkopf Field, refurbishing of Schoellkopf Stadium, a new football surface (All-Pro Turf) installed, construction of the multipurpose Alberding Field House (now Bartels Hall), and the Oxley Equestrian Center.[2]
In Kent State University:
Other accomplishments and milestones at Kent State include the addition of two sports (women’s soccer and women’s golf); facility upgrades and extensive renovations at Dix Stadium (football), the MAC Center (basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics), and Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium (baseball); as well as construction of Murphy-Mellis Field (field hockey), the Ferrara and Page Golf Training and Learning Center and the Kent State softball stadium adjacent to Dix Stadium. One of the biggest accomplishments has been the full certification status announced by the NCAA in 1997 and again in 2004.
Other improvements under Kennedy include the completion of a comprehensive gender equity study, the formation of the National Athletic Development Council, the implementation of a systematic evaluation of sports programs and the formation of a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that provides input to the department’s planning process and the construction of a state-of-the-art Athletic Academic Resource Center.

Some of the highlights of Kennedy’s first 15 years at Kent State have been the addition of two new sports (women’s soccer and women’s golf); the installation of lights, a new scoreboard and seating at Dix Stadium and new for the 2005 season a state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface; new locker rooms in the M.A.C. Center for the volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and gymnastics teams; the construction of Murphy-Mellis Field (field hockey); Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium (baseball); the Ferrara & Page Golf Training Center facility; and the renovation of the entire Dix Stadium Complex including the Kent State softball stadium. And from the lead (this would be much less of a problem if taken on its own, but in the wider context):
Since 2005 he has served as a member of the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee, a five-year position, becoming just the second representative from the Mid-American Conference to serve on the committee.
Taken from:
Kennedy also is in his fifth year as a member of the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, beginning his five-year term Sept. 1, 2005. He is just the second representative from the MAC on the committee.[4]
If they can be addressed that would be fine, but that's something like over 80% of the article, covering part of the lead and almost all of the rest of the work. So unfortunately the article as a whole would need to be rewritten. - Bilby (talk) 01:06, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for responding and providing specifics. Like I said, I've only made a few edits so am not really all that familiar with the whole article. It definitely is about 80% straight plagiarism from what you've shown; I think the only part that isn't may be the part I edited...it's been awhile. I would say most of the article would need blanked to a stub, but hopefully not a complete delete and start over. I'll see what I can do when I have a chance. --JonRidinger (talk) 05:02, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
If you could make even a viable stub that would be great - I'll help if I get the chance, but I'm a bit pressed this week with work. :( - Bilby (talk) 05:16, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully what is there now has solved the problems! --JonRidinger (talk) 18:45, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
