Naming

I note that FishBase doesn't actually list "Picasso Triggerfish" as a known name, although Google shows plenty of hits (hmm, fishbase vs google, which is more weighty??). Stan 18:29, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

A very unscientific research:

• "Picasso Triggerfish": 14700 Google hits
• "Picassofish" (the official English fishbase name): 773 Google hits
• "Picasso fish" (not available in the fishbase list): 9820 Google hits

Is there any consensus on what name should be used for fish? Personally, I would opt for the latin species name as that works everywhere. Pretty much all fish species have dozens of different names. If we stick to common English names, I vote for what is most common in Google, which is democracy at work. Anyway it seems that fishbase needs to update its common names list for this species. FishBase actually lists a dozen names in English, sort their page by language to see them all grouped together. "White-banded triggerfish" is FAO-blessed, but Google gives it a paltry 40 hits. Other FishBase names do similarly poorly. While I'm generally loath to go against the 1000+ experts who contribute to FishBase, and Google hit counts should always be treated with suspicion, 100-1 results are hard to explain away. So "Picasso Triggerfish" is OK by me. (Re latin, I've heard mention of an effort to come up with official English-language names for all fishes, a la birds, so latin not necessarily a better choice.) I added a redirect for Picasso fish as that name is often used according to Google. And a side related issue I moved the article to Picasso triggerfish to get the capitalization in accordance with WP:FISH.

Blackbar triggerfish

Blackbar triggerfish appears to be the most common name for this species. I would move the page, but it needs a RfM due to previous moves. According to some books, the Picasso fish is rhinecanthus rectangulus, however, it looks like it is actually Rhinecanthus assasi. —Viriditas | Talk 08:34, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Protection necessary?

I believe some form of protection is necessary for this page currently. A video of a lagoon triggerfish has become a "meme" recently, and there has been some minor vandalism on this page as a result. I do not have the power to enforce protection, though I do believe a protection period of 1-3 weeks would be beneficial, as memes appear to be short-lived.
