A complete list of Calcutta Book Fair themes would be appreciated. Thanks. 70.17.163.241 11:21, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Gentle trimming of this article edit

I have gently trimmed this article. If it continues to grow in size, it may need to be broken into multiple articles. Boxes and tables might also be helpful. Djembayz (talk) 19:07, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Questionable source regarding "English books are a status symbol" edit

The source provided is a podcast, and it seems no longer accessible for validation. Even assuming that the source checks through, a, the language seems opinionated and unencyclopedic, b, the text seems of little relevance to the topic of the article or the section (the Kolkata Book Fair). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diffeomorphicvoodoo (talkcontribs) 12:03, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

It's from the BBC, which is reliable. The segment was specifically about this book fair, so it is relevant. It is free and availible online, so it is easily verifiable. Benjamin (talk) 23:27, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Benjaminikuta: The podcast segment might have had to do with the Kolkata Book Fair, but the statement in question lacks context on how it's related to the Kolkata Book Fair, or the 2019 event in particular. If it's to be included in the article, it should have context on how it's related to the Fair - otherwise it comes off as a random fact with no correlation to the article subject. Was it a trend that is noticed at the Fair in particular? I'm also concerned about the attribution, "According to the BBC" - I haven't been able to locate the full podcast/transcript, but from the excerpt you shared on Reddit, it appears to be the observations of a particular individual as part of an interview.
Without having the full context of the podcast, my impression from the except is that your addition should be attributed to the organizer for the event and described as an observation made at the Fair in particular. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:27, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I was wondering which section it would belong in, as it doesn't seem specific to the year, but there doesn't seem to be a more general section. It could of course be reworded as well. Benjamin (talk) 04:34, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
If it isn't particularly related to the article subject, it might not belong at all. I've removed it for now until a good spot is determined and its reworded to better reflect the source. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:44, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Reword or move it if you want, but it should not be completely removed. Why do you think it's unrelated? The segment was specifically about this book fair. Benjamin (talk) 06:50, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Like I said, I don't have access to the full source so I cannot reword it. The podcast segment was about the book fair, but how the specific addition is related to the book fair is unclear. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:53, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean; how is it unclear? It's talking about the book fair. The things that were said were about the book fair. Perhaps I'm not understanding. Benjamin (talk) 07:31, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Benjaminikuta: What I mean is, the original text you provided did not discuss how it is related to the Kolkata Book Fair. Yes, the BBC segment may have been about the book fair, but the text in the article did not make it clear. English books are a status symbol, sometimes carried by people who don't know English...why does that belong in the 2019 section? Is this an observation from the fair or more broadly? Who provided this observation? Is it specifically talking about people at the 2019 event, Kolkata Book Fair in general, Kolkata, or India? What is the implication for the fair? (the answer is that organizer said that the English books are the most sought after at the fair...that is something that actually relates the information back to the fair). Things like that. Little context was provided around the statements. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:50, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The degree to which it is generalizable is unclear, but as I said, it's about this event in particular. Benjamin (talk) 06:09, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
