Royal Navy

Weren't the ships out of Kingston operated by the Provincial Marine until the Royal Navy took over in 1812 or 1813? If so, did the Marine operate the dockyard as well, or was it also RN? David 19:58, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello. The opening line of this entry is indeed incorrect. The Provincial Marine was a quasi-naval organization formed following the American War of Independence and was administered by the Quartermaster General's Department of the Army. The Royal Navy arrived on the Great Lakes in May 1813, however the dockyard remained until army control. It was not until January 1814, that it became a Royal Navy establishment and a commissioner appionted to run the dockyard. Following the War of 1812, the dockyard was on a reduced establishment and finally closed in 1853. Thank-you. John R.
